As we continue to take more difficult classes in pursuit of becoming nurses, it is easy to forget about self-care. In an effort to prevent burn out, our group has integrated the practices of exercise and meditation into our daily schedules. In the following, we discuss how both mediation and exercise worked and didn’t work for us, what we learned while on this journey, and how we applied our learning to teach someone the skills and knowledge we obtained in meditation and exercise. Countless research and studies have been conducted to explore the benefits of meditation and exercise in relation to people’s well-being. Dimeo, Thomas, Raabe-Menseen, Propper & Mathias (2004) studied the effects of exercise and relaxation on various post-operative cancer patients. The 72 participants, divided into two groups that either exercised on a stationary bike or practiced muscle relaxation techniques. Following the 3-week study, participants from both the exercise and relaxation group reported less fatigue and increased emotional function as well as improved overall health (Dimeo et al., 2004). In a German study, participants suffering from various forms of chronic or acute diseases, psychological distress or psychosomatic disorders, meditation were enacted in an attempt to provide participants with coping mechanisms to help alleviate stresses from their disorders. Following an 8-week meditation program, participants reported enhanced emotional and physical well-being, as well as improved psychological distress and increased conception of life (Majumdar, Grossman, Dietz-Waschkowski, Kersig, & Walach, 2002). The similarities of meditation and exercise enhance the overall well-being in reaching optimum mind and body connection. For the members of the group, practicing meditation and exercise elicited many benefits including: increased concentration and focus, better affect, reduced stress, establishing routine and organized habits (e.g. sleep pattern improvement) and

    Descartes talked about the true and the false, and how we make mistakes in Meditation Four. Descartes believed that error as such is not something real that depends upon God, but rather is merely a defect. And thus there is no need to account for my errors by positing a faculty given to me by God for this purpose(546). He thought that the reason why we make mistakes is that the faculty of judging the truth, which we got from God, is not infinite(546). When Descartes focused more closely on more closely on himself and inquired into the nature of his errors, he noted that errors depend on the simultaneous concurrence of two causes: intellect and will(547). He didn’t believe that God ought to have given us a greater faculty of knowing than he did(547). So we cannot make no mistakes like God. Then Descartes raised a question that can he complain that the will or free choice he have received from God is insufficiently ample or perfect(547). After using paragraphs talking about it, Descartes perceived that the power of willing is not the cause of his errors, for it is most ample as well as perfect in its kind(548). This idea is similar to Augustine’s ides in On Free Choice of the Will. Then he thought if he held off from making a judgment when he do not perceive what is true with sufficient clarity and distinctness, it is cleat that he was acting properly and not committing an error(548). In the end, he said he would indeed attain it if only he paid enough attention to all the things that he perfectly understand, and separate them off from the rest, which he apprehended more confusedly and more obscurely(549).…

    My self-care issue is balancing schoolwork with work, personal life and extra curricular activities. As a junior I have a lot of schoolwork, meaning a lot of assignments, projects, papers, readings and so on due every week. I am also looking for internships before I graduate that will help me get into a good Law school after I graduate, in addition to taking LSAT lessons. I am in a number of school organizations and clubs such as the pre-law club, sociology-criminology club and African Student Organization in which I am the secretary. With all this I still manage to have an on-campus job. To be honest, I have done a good job joggling my responsibilities this semester, but I have been extremely bad in taking care of my health. At the beginning of the semester, I was consistent in going to the gym, eating healthy and keeping in touch with my family. However, that has extremely depreciated. I do not go the gym anymore, I really don’t care what I eat, plus I eat at strange times due to my horrible sleeping schedule. I hardly call my parents or siblings; I just send them text messages a couple times a week to keep in touch or they call me. Also, as the secretary of the African Student Association, I have to help organize our bi-weekly meetings and executive meetings, I have to help organize the events we have and so on. I also have to balance my friends into this mess of an equation. I try to hangout with them at any free time I have, so as not to be seen as a bad friend.…
