Self Awareness
Self Awareness What is self awareness?
Self awareness is a way for us to explore our individual personalities, value systems, beliefs, natural inclinations, and tendencies. Because we are all different in the way we react to things, learn, and synthesize information, it’s helpful to occasionally spend time in self-reflection to gain a better insight into ourselves.
Why is self awareness important?
Self awareness is important because when we have a better understanding of ourselves, we are empowered to make changes and to build on our areas of strength as well as identify areas where we would like to make improvements. Self-awareness is often a first step to goal setting.
Examples of self awareness: * Preferred learning styles * Aptitude for specific career fields * Natural academic ability (athletics, mathematics, English, etc.) * Personality traits (introvert, extrovert, sensitive, judgmental, etc.) * Religious beliefs * Political viewpoints * Values (ethical, with integrity, scrupulous, etc.)

As a College of the Canyons student, you have access to classes through counseling that provide instruction on learning styles and other areas where we need self reflection. The health center offers workshops and information on various ways of making healthy choices, as well as offering counseling to students who need someone to talk to. The career center offers career assessment which helps students to understand the areas of employment that they are most suited for based on their skills and interests.
Self-awareness includes a recognition of our personality, our strengths and weaknesses, our likes and dislikes. Developing self-awareness can help us to recognise when we are stressed or under pressure. It is also often a prerequisite for effective communication and interpersonal relations, as well as for developing empathy for others.

Each pupil should understand that they are responsible for their actions whether they are acceptable or not, as well as learning how to feel great satisfaction from their achievements. The pupil should be able to identify their feelings, recognising what emotion they are feeling and how to express them appropriately. A pupil should also know that they can ask for help if their emotions are overwhelming or causing them to feel unhappy or confused. They must understand that it is ok to feel these different emotions but it may not be acceptable to react in all situations.…

What do we have to understand by self-knowledge? What do we have to know about the self? The answer to the question “who am I?” implies some precise opinions. I am Mr. A, Mr. B. A person defined by its culture, I am a body; I am my social role and my character. For others, the question “who am I?” means more: I am a person with its moral qualities, a soul, a spirit, I am a man, and I am a composition. Or even better, I am myself, I am my past. Each of these definitions corresponds to a form of self-knowledge.…

To understand them we must explain each individually. Self-awareness is when a child begins to understand their place and how they fit into their environment, relating to others in that environment. For example their role in a class room and how they relate to the teacher and other pupils in that class room. They understand how to feel positive about something, receiving an award or completing some work, yet understand that it’s ok to be finding other things more difficult. They will appreciate that they have a responsibility to themselves for their behaviour, and their education, completing tasks that the teacher has set for example or homework. Pupils learn that their thinking, their emotions and their actions are all linked, and that having emotions is natural, but it doesn’t mean they can behave anyway they choose.…
