Different areas that speak Spanish have different dialects. Some of these areas do consider people from other areas to be outsiders. An example would be people from Mexico are not necessarily accepting of people from Puerto Rico because they consider the Puerto Ricans to be outsiders even though they are both Spanish speaking countries. I think Selena was able to overcome this problem in Mexico because of her personality and she didn 't try to hide her American heritage either. Selena also had a very confident approach to everything that she did. I believe she was popular because people could relate to her and they viewed her as one of them. Selena also did not allow her popularity to change her, she was still the same person she always was.…

Selena's strongest patriarchical constraint was her father. In the article "Reconceptualizing Gender Through Intercultural Dialogue: The Case of the Tex-Mex Madonna", it is said that Selena's father referred to her as "a genuinely good person" who was "clean and stood for the family" (Willis and Gonzalez 1997), but, he still attempted to control many aspects of her life. One scene in the Movie Selena emphasizes this idea when Selena goes on stage in a bustier and begins to perform, at which point her father instantly objects and asks Selena's mother why Selena is wearing such a suggestive article of clothing. Another moment in which Selena's father, Abraham, constrains Selena with his "father figure" role is when she begins to have relations with Chris, a member of the band. Abraham asks…

As she got older and began to rebel, he started to see her point of view and that she was an adult and could make her own decisions. Las Tres Marias

The significance of Las 3 Maria's syndrome is that it represents our culture's/society's essentialist views about women and because our society is primarily a patriarchy, society's views are centered on a "macho" way of thinking. In Borderlands, Anzaldua tells us that "Culture forms our beliefs" and because culture is run by those in power, it's the men that make the rules. She also goes on to explain how our society condemns selfishness, the needs of the family/community and therefore La Raza, are more important than the individuals. The end result is society's diminishing of women into keeping us in "rigidly defined roles" as either a virgin, mother and/or whore. It further oppresses us because it keeps many women from rebelling, since those who do are immediately categorized under the "whore." Personally, I don't know many women who would like to be seen as whores. Feminists have taken these roles and linked them to the bible as metaphors representing the three Mary's present at Jesus' crucifixion Virgin Mary, Mary mother of James, and Mary Magdalene.…
