Secondhand Lions and the Secret Lion
Secondhand Lion & The Secret Lion

Identify one flat character and one round character from either short story or the film. Explain why you believe your choices fits the criteria for these two types of characters.
Every story has to have a round character. A round character is a major character that changes throughout the story. I think that Walter is a round character because the story revolves around him and he changes from being a scared and innocent kid to a free and independent kid. He understands what’s right and what’s wrong.

Where there is a round character there is a flat character as well. A flat character is the complete opposite of a round character. A flat character is a minor character that does not change throughout the story and I think that Walter’s mother Mae is the flat character in the movie because the story does not revolve around her and she stays the same greedy, selfish mother from the begin to the end.

Identify an example of situational irony from the film or short story. How does your example fit the definition of situational irony?
Situational irony is a situation in the story that goes opposite to what was suppose to happen, In other words a sharp turn in the other direction. A situation that I thought was a situational irony in the movie was when the lion attacked the man to protect Walter and it died instead of the man.
How does the structure of “Secondhand Lions” compare to the classic literary plot line? Illustrate your response by including a graph showing the movie v. the classical plot line. idk Who is telling the story in “Secondhand Lions” and “The Secret Lion”? Is it a first person narrator or a third person narrator? How would the stories have been affected if a different point of view had been used?
In the story “Second hand lions” it was a third person narration and in “The secret lion” it was a first person narration. I think the stories would have been affected greatly if the point of view changes. I think that changing the point of view of the story might reduce some of its effectiveness. The action during the plot of the story may affect different characters in a different way. Different characters may show a deeper meaning behind the story.
Assume you’re Walter in “Secondhand Lions.” What was your motivation for jumping out of the car and returning to your uncles’ ranch? [Answer as if you were writing a note to your mom, Mae.]
My motivation for jumping out of the car and returning to my uncles ranch was that my mother was going to marry somebody that hit me! For her own good. So, I thought that if I stayed in that car I would have been trapped for the rest of my life. So I decided to jump out and go to my uncle’s ranch and life a free and fun life.
Identify the use of symbolism in “The Secret Lion.” Choose what you consider to be a main symbol
and identify what the symbol represents. Why did the author choose to use this symbol?
The lion, or more specifically a secret lion, the river, and the grinding ball are all symbols used in the story to reinforce the theme of coming of age. Coming of age is a time of rebellion, and the river symbolizes a way, and a place, to rebel. It also symbolizes the many discoveries they will make before they are grown up, and more importantly the changing and evolution of perception. The arroyo does not change throughout the years, but the view of what it is does.

There are verbal irony, situational irony and dramatic irony. An example of verbal irony from Ransom of Red Chief is on page 65 paragraph 6 it says “Me?” says I. “Oh, I got a kind of pain in my shoulder. I thought sitting up would rest it.” This is verbal irony because he is actually scared of Red Chief and that is why he is getting up. An example of verbal irony from Home Alone is when Kevin says he’s not scared when he really is. This is verbal irony because what he said is the opposite of what he feels. An example of situational irony in the Ransom of Red Chief is on page 67 paragraph 9 when they say “I was only playing a joke,” says he sullenly “I didn’t mean to hurt Old Hank. But what did he have to hit me for? I’ll behave Snake-eye if you won’t send me home. And if you let me play an example in Ransom of Red Chief is on page 71 paragraph 12 it says “In about a half an hour, I heard the bushes rustle. Bill wobbled out into the little clearing in front of the cave. Behind him was the kid. He came stepping softly like a scout, with a broad grin on his face.” and on page 72 paragraph 3 it says “The boy is gone. I have sent him home. All our plans are off.” This shows that Bill doesn’t know the boy is right behind him. This is dramatic irony. An example of dramatic irony from the movie Home Alone Kevin doesn’t know his family left for vacation. This is also dramatic irony. So this shows how all three types of irony can affect the reader and also the characters in a…

Immediately after Gwendolen said that she started questioning Jack, which is an example of verbal irony. When Lady Bracknell entered and asked Algernon if Jack’s country estate is where his friend Bunbury lived, he told her that Bunbury died. The irony in Algernon’s situation is that Bunbury doesn’t even exist. Lady Bracknell is an ironic character, because she values money and status although she married into fortune. Towards the end of the act, a few occasions of situational irony occurs throughout the end of the plot. One example was when readers found out that Jack is actually Algernon’s brother, but was lost when Miss Prism put him in her handbag instead of the three-volume manuscript she wrote. The fact that readers most like didn’t expect to find out that the handbag Jack was found in was Miss Prism’s could be considered situational irony. Another example was when Jack was trying to find out his Christian name and it ended up actually being Ernest John. When he learned about his true origin it turned out he didn’t really lie, and it allowed him to finally be engaged to…

The situational irony is a contrast between what is expected to happen and what actually does happen. The example of situational irony is when Reverend Hale told John to say the Ten Commandments and John forgot the last one, which just so happened to be the one he broke, which was adultery. Elizabeth was the one to remind him that adultery was the one he forgot. The situational irony there is that John has literally forgotten that one.…

Both authors have used situational irony in their texts to lead the readers to an unexpected ending and to display the innocence and or, guilt. ‘The Lottery’ by Shirley Jackson used situational irony to show the guilty mother and father in the text, however Ursula Le Guin has used situational Irony in ‘The Wife’s Story’ to position the readers into an innocent mind frame of the wolves. In ‘The Lottery’, Shirley Jackson used situational irony to manipulate the audience’s thoughts on the town’s customs. First portraying the lottery game as an innocent family tradition, then shocking the audience when the situational irony is used and it shows the reverse in the story. With the assistance of this technique, Shirley Jackson has now displayed a terrible competition of where stoning family members helps grow the crops. Once Tessie Hutchinson saw that her father had won the lottery she said ‘’’I tell you it wasn’t fair. You didn’t give him enough time to choose. Everybody saw that.’’’ Tessie’s words cause the audience to gain on Tessie’s innocence and also the audience thinks differently about the lottery game and why Tessie was not happy with winning. The situational irony causes the audience to contemplate the reasons why Tessie is gloomy with winning.…

Irony is used in stories to show that there is a difference in reality and the way things appear to be either in terms of meaning,‭ ‬action,‭ ‬or situation.‭ ‬In two of Flannery O 'Conner 's short stories entitled‭ "‬Good Country People,‭" ‬and‭ "‬A Good Man Is Hard to Find,‭" ‬she uses the technique of irony to help her create various different degrees of abnormal characters and situations.‭ ‬These seemingly intellectual people act abnormally in order to satisfy their own selfish desires‭; ‬likewise,‭ ‬the seemingly normal situations are misleading in the way that they appear to be average but result in deviant chaos.‭ ‬There are many different examples of these awry characters and circumstances in these short stories.‭ ‬There are also examples of the different types of irony that Flannery O 'Connor uses,‭ ‬such as verbal irony,‭ ‬dramatic irony,‭ ‬and situational irony.‭…

An example of situational irony in the story is how Mrs.Mallard and the readers think that Mr.Mallard is dead and it is revealed abruptly that he is actually alive. I think that the irony was used very well in the story and added a feeling of suspense. This irony is important to the plot because if we had known that Mr.Mallard was alive the whole time it might have changed the readers opinion of Mrs. Mallard. For example people might think that she should not feel the way that she did, and instead of her the reader might dislike the character.…

Irony is an event that the reader expects to happen, but is the quite opposite, usually for a funny or dramatic effect. In An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge, Peyton Fahrquar is sentenced to death by hanging by the federal military during the civil war for attempting to burn a bridge they were controlling. In this short story, Fahrquar jumps off of the bridge with the noose around his neck and his hands and feet tied, but he still lives. This is an example of irony because the reader will expect him to die instantaneously, but suddenly it was as if the rope grew longer and he fell into the water. As he ‘escapes’, sharpshooters aim and fire, but not a single round will touch him. At the end of the short story, it explains how Fahrquar runs all night to get to his family, just as…
