Secant Line Lab Report
The average rate of change is calculating the slope of a secant line between two points. Finding the average rate of change of a secant line is similar to finding the slope of two given points. The formula to find the slope of a secant line is the change of “y” divided by the change of “x”, so this is use to calculate the change over time in a given function. When finding the average rate of change of any interval, it doesn’t necessarily have to be a line there are other applications too. For example, a graph that is not a linear function as the quadratic function has a shape of a parabola, but we still can determine its average rate of change. In order to get the average rate of change of a quadratic function we connect two points on the parabola and this line is called the secant line. Let’s remember that the slope of a quadratic function will not be constant, because it will be different based on whatever two …show more content…
The average velocity, which is important in physics, can be defined as the change in distance divided by the change in time. When applying, the average velocity we are looking at real life application as how quickly air temperature is rising or dropping as a hurricane is approaching. Other application we used the average velocity when you want to know the average rate of speed you ran or travel at a given time. When driving your car you might want to know your average velocity from point A to point B, and you didn’t travel at a constant speed. We want to figure how fast we travel, this is possible by using the average velocity formula.
There are some situations where we are given a function to determine f(x)=? then we are given a starting X1, and then an ending X2, next we be ask to find the average rate of change. So, we can solve the problem that deal with “average rates of change with formulas” by using this formula which is the same
