THE BEATITUDES (MATTHEW 5:3 – 10; KING JAMES VERSION)
Blessed are the poor in spirit; for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are they that mourn; for they shall be comforted.
Blessed are the meek; for they shall inherit the earth.
Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness; for they shall be filled.
Blessed are the merciful; for they shall obtain mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart; for they shall see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers; for they shall be called the children of God.
Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake; for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. About the poem:
These words were spoken by Jesus during his Sermon on the Mount, and recorded in the
Gospels of Matthew and Luke in the New Testament. They are among the best known and most respected utterances of the Christian religion.
For some of the most beautiful poetry in the Jewish and Christian scriptures, you might like to read the Song of Songs, one of the books of the Old Testament.
Something to think about:
Although neither a prayer nor, strictly speaking, a poem, this extract has many of the distinguishing hallmarks of poetry. Can you identify these?

Matthew 5-7 talks about the teachings of Jesus Christ to his disciples as he sat mountainside. He teaches them the way to live a blessed and holy life. His teaching are made up of four gospels (Good news) that begin the New Testament of the Christian Bible. The Christian Bible has two parts the Old Testament which is longer and the New Testament. The Old Testament is based on Jewish scripture while the New Testament begins with the teachings of Jesus Nazareth, a jew from Israel. Gospels are the stories about Jesus's life and teachings. There are four gospels in which the first three are synoptic gospels that focus on the summary of Jesus's life and actions. There names are Matthew, Mark, and Luke. The fourth gospel is much different from the…

The Bible contains four Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, with Mark considered to be the first written. Throughout this gospel, Jesus Christ is depicted as the ‘suffering servant’ while encapsulating the core morals of integrity, compassion and justice. This culmination of qualities accentuates Jesus’ humanity and benevolence towards everyone who he encountered. Mark, or John Mark as some individuals identify the author as, hoped to influence others with a specific target of Non-Jewish Christians, by showing Jesus and people’s reaction to him. While the other gospels present Jesus as the archetype of a Saviour and God on Earth, Mark diverges from this path in order to create written text exemplifying the humanist who Jesus Christ was.…

Christ calls the most unlikely people “blessed” at the start of His Sermon on the Mount as read in Matthew 5:1-12. Tod Lindberg has offered a rather in depth analysis of these in his essay on “What the Beatitudes Teach.” Lindberg points out a pattern in the beatitudes. They start with the most oppressed and seemingly hopeless people and progress to those that suffer for their right doing.…

I believe that the beatitude “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Means to always be humble. This beatitude shows that people who are humble will go to heaven, while those who are not humble may have other plans in store. Humility is truly something that has been overshadowed in today’s world, with everyone boasting of there own accomplishments, and not thanking or recognizing others for the great things that they have done. Yes, being great at something is awesome, but you did not get there all on your own, you have to give credit where it is due, and boasting about that certain thing will only make you seem cocky. This is the first beatitude,…

The first Beatitude addresses the ‘poor in spirit.’ Jesus contrasts their condition of lowliness with the highest honor bestowed upon anyone, “theirs is the kingdom of heaven.’’ Through this Beatitude, Barclay comments that Jesus refers to ‘the man who has realized that things mean nothing and that God means everything.’ Jesus blesses those who are humble and place their total trust in God to provide for them. In terms of morality, this teaches us that we should not idolize material things but realize that without the grace of God, none of these things are available or matter; without God we are utterly helpless. In order to live a moral life we must uphold the values of humility and total obedience to God.…
