Busy business bee Sean Combs

Maybe you haven’t heard of Sean Combs but you certainly did hear of his alter ego Puff Daddy/P. Diddy. Combs isn’t just one of those rappers. Business, music, charity, politics,… Nothing is unknown territory to him.
This busy bee not only started his own record label Bad Boy Worldwide Entertainment, but also a marketing and advertising agency. For a normal human being this combination would be extremely stressful but not for Combs. He even went further: with lots of ambition he produced television series and started his own restaurant. The catering industry was warned. But this isn’t just everything! Last but not least he has a successful clothing line Sean John which stands for bling bling, hip hop and attitude. The fact he got a fashion award for his creations as a designer is the best proof he isn’t an ordinary “fashion-aware” black rapper.

From zero to hero: motivation is crucial

This media empire and his celebrity status didn’t come easily to him, coming from the inner city of New York. He has started his career as a rapper and collaborations with Mary J. Blige and Notorious B.I.G. were his first remarkable performances. His debut album followed soon. Two Grammies were the logical result of a 7 times platinum album. But Diddy didn’t get satisfied and he wanted more. Being convinced he didn’t belong in a box, he has used the music industry as a springboard to explore other businesses. With success. Sean Combs made the world his. What drives him and how does he manage all his companies? Well, Combs is a responsible man who’s very ambitious with a clear goal: rule the world. Loving what he is doing keeps him alive in the business. No one else is as passionate about what he does as he is. He also has the unique ability to see potential and bring out the best in people so his company keeps on running. People believe in what he does, because he’s so successful and he creates opportunities for other people.

He has overcome poverty after growing up on the hard streets of Harlem New York to become one of the biggest names of today’s celebrities. He is the true epitome of an entrepreneur, and as he would say, “ Don’t chase the money, chase the dream” (Puff). Being born on May 21st, 1972, Biggie was caught in the middle of racial violence, gang wars, and a lifestyle that most people can’t relate to. At the age of fifteen, Biggie was selling crack on the streets of Brooklyn, being better known for dealing drugs than making rhymes. This part in Biggie’s life greatly influenced who he became, a world renowned rapper. His career started in basements and street corners around town, freestyling to his peers and neighborhood friends. People knew biggie as the street corner thug who could spit a rap when he wanted, and about what he wanted. His talent was nothing to overlook, he started rapping with the “Gold Brothers” and the “Techniques”, who ended up introducing Biggie to his first recording studio. At the age of 17 Biggie had dropped out of school, despite showing potential. The idea of money and power was too large to give up. Ounce he was released, he started to put together mix tapes, which bounced from source to source, causing Biggie’s name to gain publicity. Biggie’s first solo song, “Party and Bullshit” was featured in the film Who’s the Man? Not long after Biggie started to gain fame, music producer “Puffy”, or Sean Combs started to take interest, and began to record and produce for Biggie. In 1994 Biggie released his first album, “Ready to Die”, which exploded in the rap industry. Biggie had gone from hustling drugs on the corner in 1990, to being the “top-selling rap artist” in 1995 as MTV puts it. Things were looking up for biggie, until his fellow rap artist Tupac Shakur was killed in a drive by shooting. Tupac’s followers blamed Biggie and his crew, who denied any affiliation. Seven months later, Biggie was killed in a drive by shooting. Many believe the perpetrators belonged to Tupac’s crew, or a number of…

With his tattoo-splattered physique, piercing deep-set eyes, and shaved head, Tupac Amaru Shakur came across as middle America's worst nightmare, the darkest strain of hip-hop. To fans, Shakur was only "thuggin' against society, thuggin' against the system that made me," as he once rapped. Like some other rappers, Shakur was criticized for his sexist lyrics He celebrated his mother, Afeni, but was equally capable of debasing women in his music. The contradictions hardly ended there. In his last video, "I Ain't Mad at Cha," Shakur--newly arrived in Heaven--saluted an old friend for quitting the "thug life." In "Only God Can Judge Me," Shakur foresaw death bearing down on him, yet seemed unable to tolerate his rival, The Notorious B.I.G. and B.I.G.'s mentor, Sean "Puffy" Combs. Tupac’s rags-to-riches story and his constant attention to and actions to improve the ills of the ghettos and black communities represents themes such as agency in the midst of oppression, African-American culture influencing mainstream culture, as well as sankofa. He was a controversial public figure who, although his heart was in the right place, often did not go about dealing with the societal issues which most concerned him in the best way. At age ten, when asked by a minister what he would like to be when he grows up, he responds, “A revolutionary” (McQuillar and Johnson, 39). He truly was. At age twenty, he says during an interview that his lyrics are his battle cry to America (Tupac: Resurrection). They truly were.…
