Training Location & Details | Reason | Brunei (Started in 1977) * Kilong Camp in the Temburong District (Eastern-most District, it is an exclave.) - Terrain: Steep & hilly rainforests, impenetrable to sunlight and thick undergrowth → made movement difficult - (RSN) In 1979, SG and Brunei navies conducted the first in the series of annual naval exercises (codenamed Pelican). - (ARMY) In 1983, SG and Brunei initiated annual infantry manuvers (codenamed Termite) involving selected battalions from both countries. - (RSAF) Since 1978, RSAF has maintained a detachment of UH-1Hs “Huey” in Brunei. | - Crucial need for space for maneuvers → which was fast disappearing due to rapid housing and urban development in training areas such as Jurong, Choa Chu Kang & Marsiling - SAF is prepared for combat in different, unfamiliar terrains and conditions | Timor Leste / East Timor - Terrain: coastal mountains and mountain-forests challenging topographical conditions. It also has a coastline of 873km and 2 coast. | - Unique variance of Timorese geography & its close proximity provide Singapore with the opportunity to cost-effectively train in niche area such as special operations, littoral operations, Undersea Warfare (USW) and Search and Rescue (SAR) USW (RSN): Operations conducted to establish battlespace dominance in the underwater environment SAR (RSAF & RSN): The use of aircraft, surface craft (land or water), submarines, specialized rescue teams, and equipment to search for and rescue personnel in distress on land or at sea.
