The foundation of Taylor’s principles are as applicable today as they were almost a century ago, although the methods he recommended for applying the principles have been improved to a large magnitude. Opening with an introduction to Taylor’s principles of scientific management, the usefulness of his principles for managing modern organisations will be explored and concluding remarks to support the thesis will be presented.

An Introduction to Taylor’s Principles of Scientific Management Scientific Management is based on the ideas of Frederick Taylor who was often viewed as the “Father of scientific management” expected to his major significance on management. Taylor (1919, p.9) deliberated that “The principal objective of management should be to secure maximum prosperity for the employer, coupled with the maximum prosperity for each employee”. This was accomplished through Taylor’s preface of his five principles as to decide the best way to do the job, to find the most appropriate person for the job, to prepare the most suitable person so they are capable to pursue the correct procedure, present financial rewards to maximise

    The Scientific Management approach was initially described and theorized by Frederick Winslow Taylor in the in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. In his book “Principles of Scientific Management”, first published in 1911, Frederick Taylor formulated a view on management that was highly inspired by engineering principles.. Frederick Taylor developed Scientific Management out of the belief that tasks could be optimized scientifically, and that Scientific Management could design the best rational way of performing any task, which would lead to enhanced productivity and profitability. Enhanced productivity would not only lead to greater profits for the employers, but also for the workers, who would be given the tools and training to perform at optimum performance.(Wu, 2009) This theory was intended at studying the liaison between thephysical nature of the work and physiological nature of the workmen.It also stresses the importance of technical competency which will improve the organizations efficiency (Wu, 2009). Taylor’s four universal principles include: constructing a science for each element of the workers tasks; scientifically select, train, teach and develop the workers managers need to fully cooperate with the workers and the work shall be shared equally between managers and workers (Wu, 2009). According to Bell and Martin (2012), “it is important for managers to use Taylor’s scientific methods of determine the component tasks identified with a specific job and how long it takes to perform each component in order to know if the work load is balanced between all of the workers, or if the work needs to be reapportioned” ( p. 111).…

    In todays modern era of business, with its exploding technological advances, easier access to materials and a much more skilled and specialized labor force the ideology behind using scientific management is fast becoming as dated a method as the industries that still heavily rely upon its principles to function efficiently.     Scientific management is a theory of management that began with Frederick Winslow Taylor in the 1880s and 1890s his theory examined and manufactured workflows. His main theory’s objective was improving economic efficiency, especially labour productivity. It was one of the earliest attempts to apply science to the engineering of processes and to management. Its peak of influence that came not too many years after he put forward his theory was still dominant but had begun an era of competition with opposing or so called complementary ideas. Frederick’s theory of scientific management was known to emphasize careful selection and training of workers as well as controlling support. As it can develop for every job a knowledge that includes rules of motion, standardized work processes and proper working conditions. This was only thrived on if organizations or companies such as a fitness companies e.g. ‘Fitness First’ carefully selected and professionally trained their workers so that they could assure and be satisfied that the workers had the right abilities for the job and to combat that were supported by carefully planning their work to create a smooth ride along the way. Although since other theories have been put forward it doesn’t necessarily mean that Frederick’s theory is 100% true as it depends on the application you use the theory for because different industries use different methods for different strengths.…
