The ABMAMACAW Catapult Catapults were first made to hurdle cats (on a more serious note). There are many different types of catapults, such as the mangonel catapult. The mangonel catapult which our catapult is based on was created in 400 B.C. by the Romans. The mangonel was created like the Greek ballista but was smaller and mobile. Our catapult was based on some aspects of the mangonel. In the following I will talk about the process and materials used to make it and the science of the catapult.
Some of the materials we used are:
Wood- for the structure of the catapult
Bungee Cords- to give the arm a bounce so when the ball is released it would go far
Spray Paint- to give a base of color to the catapult
Paint- to do splatter paint and give the catapult personality
Rubber Bands- to give the arm a bounce so when the ball is released it would go far
Lacrosse Stick- is used as the top of the arm where the ball will sit until launched
Pipe- gives the arm height so that the ball will go far
Duct Tape- to strengthen the attachment between the pipe and the lacrosse stick

First we drew out a lay out of what we thought the catapult was going to look like. We drew it in both a front view and bird’s eye view. Then we wrote out how long we thought the pieces of wood would be. Next we went to Carmen’s Grandpas’ shop where we started the base of the catapult. After that we added the center piece which would be where the arm hits to stop at an 80° angle. Next we added the arm and tested it out. Finally we painted it and and topped that off with some splatter paint.
Our catapult stores energy in the bungee cords at the bottom. When the ball is fired the potential energy in the bungees are converted into kinetic energy. The force of the bungee cords causes the bottom of the arm to fly back and the front of the arm to fly forward. The kinetic energy travels through the arm to the top of the lacrosse stick and into the ball. The

    When the trebuchet is fired, the weight box falls, and the force of gravity causes rotational acceleration of the attached throwing arm around the axle. The sling is attached to the end of the throwing portion of the throwing arm (opposite the counter weight portion). The sling contains the projectile and thrusts the projectile forwards. The sling also changes the trajectory, so that, at the time of release from the sling, the projectile is traveling in the desired speed and angle to give it the range to reach the target. A teacher could use this to show both potential and kinetic energy. In a history classroom, a treuchet could be used to highlight the medieval times. Trebuchets will most easily fit into a science or math classroom, but I also think that History is an option. As for the lesson plan, in History, the students would learn the history of the trebuchet, and then would be able to see one in real life.     The best way to start an experiment is to ask a question. Our question is, “What is a trebuchet?” In answering this question, we will investigate nearly every aspect of a trebuchet, including but not limited to history, design, build, and theory. Our experiment was started with the help of a packet which contained much of this information, therefore the only thing that needed to be completed was the design and build, and the work that follows-testing, demonstrating, and reporting. From experience, the best way to build a kit is simplicity. We did not spend a lot of time designing, but rather using past ideas to base our design on. Our reason for this is that there has been hundreds of years since the creation of the trebuchet, and since it has been optimized, why try to “fix what isn’t broke?” As you can see in fig. 1, our initial design was extremely basic. Our build consisted of assembly, using the supplied supplies, testing, tweaking, and retesting. The main objective is to achieve consistency. We used2 L brackets as the initial main uprights, and eventually added a long straight piece to each to increase pivot point height. We supported these uprights by using 2 short flat pieces connecting the base and uprights at a 45° angle. Our arm is the piece most of the work was focused on. We tried to maximize the weight on the weight side of the arm, while minimizing the weight on the basket side of the arm. This was done by adding multiple brackets and hardware on the weight side, and by using lightweight pieces on the basket side. The basket was used and tied into the end of the arm, and a metal rod is used to hold the loop of the basket to determine launch angle. The majority of our procedure was based on the effect of the trebuchet, and being able to correct any deficiencies.…

    According to Merriam Webster, a catapult is “an ancient military device used for the purpose of hurling missiles”. And this definition couldn’t be any truer. Put simply, a catapult is a device that does not use any explosives to launch a projectile or a group of projectiles towards a target. Usually, the long arms is pulled back by a ropes or set of ropes, then letting them go, causing the long arm to swing forward. However, this is not the only way a catapult is used. There are 5 different types of catapults: the trebuchet, the Ballista, the Mangonel, the Springald, and the Onager.     Catapults have been used since Greek and Roman times. They were used as siege engines against castles and walled cities. The ammunition loaded into the catapults were meant to break the walls with stones, fire incendiary missiles over the walls, or used for biological warfare, such as launching dead animals over the wall to spread disease. The type of catapult we built is a mangonel catapult. We like to call it RZYAACN (our names combined and it sounds cool). The catapult works through torsion, which is the tension caused when an object is twisted in one direction while the other end is motionless or twisted in the opposite direction, with equal and opposite torques at each end. Now to the construction of the catapult, we first had to decide which type we would build. We decided on the mangonel catapult because of its seemingly simple design, need for not too much materials, and awesomeness. We then went to the store Home Depot to buy our supplies. At Home Depot, we bought two 2x4’s (inches) which were eight feet and 12 feet long, and we had a Home Depot employee cut up for us into smaller lengths. He cut the wood up into two pieces that were 36 inches long, one piece that was 30 inches long, four piece that were 15 inches long, and one piece that was 18 inches long. We also bought one piece of square plywood that was half an inch thick, and had it cut from its original 24 inches by 24 inches size to 15 inches by 18 inches. We bought a 36 inch cylindrical piece of wood, which we sawed at the store into two pieces, 15 inches long each. Lastly, we bought 21 feet of nylon rope at the store, which was cut by one of the employees. We then drove back to the house, where the real construction began. We set up the base of the catapult with the two 36 inch piece of wood and two of the 15 inch pieces, setting them up in a rectangle. We used power drill, and used a drill bit to start the hole, and then drilled in three…
