NASA approved science experiments of Grade Schools
A Science Symposium was held at Hardy Elementary School last October. The event was participated by students from Hardy, Parmley and Turner Elementary Schools in the Willis Independent School District. The participants performed science experiments. Symposium participants focus on real microgravity experiments for the International Space Station. About 100 students of Hardy Elementary listened to Dr. Lisa Brown, a former NASA employee, as she discussed the history of space exploration. She also pointed out that schools should give importance in making science projects. To follow the protocol set by NASA, students use salt solutions, grass seed, ants and fleas in their experiments.

Ohmic Heating Project
Bio-Processing Division of PhilMech and Department of Science and Technology have shared their resources to conduct further research in a process called Ohmic heating. Ohmic heating is an advanced thermal processing method wherein the food material is heated by passing electricity through it. Electrical energy is dissipated into heat which results in rapid and uniform heating to kill pathogens and microbes. Ohmic heating is also called electrical resistance heating, Joule heating, or electro-heating, and may be used for a variety of applications in the food industry.

Climate Change and the Coral Reefs
A research study in Australia revealed that Philippines is rich in marine biodiversity which is connected to other marine ecosystems in the Pacific ocean. Filipino marine students are now studying the decreasing count of coral reefs which will have a great impact on our lives in the future. According to the study of Prof. Terry Hughes, Australia's foremost marine biologist on coral ecosystems, marine biology students in the Philippines could do a big help to further study the problems in coral ecosystems to learn the possible outcome on aquatic life and Filipino livings.

We selected this research project because we want to compare the effects of using papaya’s papain and the commercial meat tenderizers that can be bought in many supermarkets. Some people also tried this research project, like Gian Paul Giron, a student in a university in Manila. It spurred me to work on this problem because other researchers did not accomplish in making the papain meat tenderizer available in markets and can be bought in a lower price than the commercial ones. The results of this study can make a contribution to attain a better quality life, because if this will be successful, consumers can now buy a meat tenderizer that is chemical-free. It means that the papaya that we will be using will not use any commercial fertilizers.…

An article in “African Journal of Traditional Complementary and Alternative Medicine” about in 2008 have reported that a clinical study done on rats induced with diabetes mellitus then fed with guyabano (Annona Muricata Linn) extracts showed positive effects of lowering the blood sugar levels in animals. Another study reported by the same publication showed that animals with induced diabetes mellitus that consumed guyabano extract has shoed remarkable increase of antioxidants in their blood and that there is less liver damage. The findings of this laboratory animal study suggest that (guyabano) Annona muricata extract has a protective, beneficial effect on hepatic tissues subjected to STZ-induced oxidative stress, possibly by decreasing lipid peroxidation and indirectly enhancing production of insulin and endogenous antioxidants. Although the reports suggested that guyabano extracts have promising medicinal benefits for diabetes mellitus. there is no sufficient study done on its effects to humans with diabetes.…

Research is a process by which people discover or create new knowledge about the world in which they live. The Intel ISEF and Affiliated Fairs are research (data) driven. Students design research projects that provide quantitative data through experimentation followed by analysis and application of that data. Projects that are demonstrations, ‘library’ research or informational projects, ‘explanation’ models or kit building are not appropriate for research based science fairs. Questioning is probably the most important part of a scientific investigation and is often followed by an “if…then” statement. Students are encouraged to design ‘controlled’ experiments, ones that allow them to set up a standard and then change only one variable at a time to see how that variable might affect the original condition tested as the standard. Thus, questioning usually leads to experiments or observations. Good scientists, both young and old, frequently use a process to study what they see in the world. This process has been referred as the ‘Scientific Method’ or more recently as the ‘Inquiry Cycle’. The following stages listed below will help you produce a good scientific experiment: 1) Be curious, choose a limited subject, ask a question; identify or originate/define a problem. It is important that this question be a ‘testable’ question – one in which data is taken and used to find the answer. A testable question can further be identified as one in which one or more variables can be identified and tested to see the impact of that variable on the original set of conditions. The question should not merely be an ‘information’ question where the answer is obtainable through literature research. 2) Review published materials related to your problem or question. This review should also include reviewing the International Rules and Guidelines (www.societyforscience. org/isef/rulesandguidelines). This is called background…

This study was conducted to compare the effectiveness of 150 mL wild yam (Dioscorea villosa) extract as golden apple snail (Pomacea canaliculata) molluscicide on different water level of mini-pond. This experimented study made use of One Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) to determine the significant difference on the mortality rate of golden apple snail when treated with 150 mL wild yam extracts on different water level mini-pond such that treatment A is 1cm water level treatment B is 2 cm water-level, treatment C is 3cm water level mini-pond. Based on the result, treatment A with 150 mL wild yam extract 1cm water level mini-pond produced the highest mortality rate golden apple snail, followed by treatment B with 150 mL wild yam extract on 2 cm water level and lastly, treatment C with 150 mL wild yam extract on 3 cm water level mini-pond.…
