Zero population growth (ZPG) may be described as the state in which a country, state, or region is in during a time where the population does not increase nor decrease. At this state, the average total fertility rate is 2.1. As of now, the zero population growth movement is targeting underdeveloped countries and regions that have an exploding population, such as India and Sub-Saharan Africa. While ZPG may contradict with religious beliefs in these underdeveloped areas, there are ways to achieve a population that remains the same, such as birth control (condoms, pills), family planning, and pushing higher education on the poor. Birth control would prevent pregnancies. Family planning would help poor families to determine how to handle the situation of having two kids. Putting education into the equation would cause a better economy in India and Sub-Saharan Africa, which would then detour families from having a large number of kids. The neo-Malthusians believe that while population increases exponentially (1 person, 2 people, 4 people, 8 people, 16 people), food supply only increases arithmetically (1 tomato, 2 tomatoes, 3 tomatoes, 4 tomatoes).1 During the rapid increase of population, neo-Malthusians have a strong feeling that the food supply will run out, and thus, they agree with the zero population growth movement. Living in New York, walking on crowded streets, and bumping into people no matter which corner I take, I can see the issues that arise when people think of population growth. It’s an issue we don’t usually think about, but one that Paul Ehrlich feels strongly about. He believes that it’s only a matter of time that we run out of food, and that humans will cease to survive. In the beginning of my research, I learned some basic information about college and preparation. Since I’m a senior, I felt that academic preparation was already too late since colleges mainly look at my gpa from grades from 10-11. The grades I have now will still affect my gpa and most importantly scholarship eligibility, so I’m aiming to do my best. So far, I’ve met the fall checklist by checking with my counselor to see if I make graduation requirements. What I haven't done is register for and take the standardized tests required for college admission. I was recently informed at Vista’s college night that in order to go straight into a four year you have to have already taken the SAT for college leveled class placement and submit your scores to the college you are applying at. Also, there are business I and my parents need to visit colleges campuses during the spring and in the winter apply to FAFSA (free application for federal student aid) or any other financial aid applications the school I apply at may require. I also learned about the different types of Aid there are. There is Federal and Nonfederal. Federal Aid is money given to you that you don't have to payback, that is if you qualify. But if there is still more help needed, there is the federal student loan. But just just like any loan, money borrowed is money paid back. These loans are often more advised rather than other types of loans such as private student loans because of the often lower fixed interest rates. Another feature Federal Aid includes are Grants and Scholarships. These are sometimes known as “gift aids”, as said on the website, because its free money given without owing.
