In the following space, explain the role of fossils in developing the Geologic column. Your explanation must be between 200 and 300 words.

Fossils are the remains of animals, plants and insects that lived millions to hundreds of thousands of years ago. When an animal in that time period died its bones were left on the ground. Over thousands of years organic matter or soil covered those bones. As the bones get covered the minerals in the soil replace the composition of the bones in to something else. Over The ages heat and pressure from the above layers turn those minerals in to stone. The animal’s bones are now stone but still are in the shape of the original bones therefore producing a

    1. The author and his colleagues wanted to use 375 million old rock, because in the 385 million year old rocks they found what look like fish. In the 365 million year old rocks they found amphibians that did not look like fish, so to find the change the look at the 375 million year old rock to find transition between the two. In their paleontology work in 2004 they found sedimentary rocks in Pennsylvania and on the east coast of Greenland, but their most successful rock was found in the Artic of Canada.…

Looking at the data from PAST, it is clearly evident that the paleo-community of the fossil assemblage was fairly dominated by the single Mulinia indet., species with a dominance number of 0.455. The closer this number was to one, the more dominated the community was, (Hammer etal. 2005). Also, when looking at the evenness data from PAST a number of 0.343 was shown, indicating that the community was more dominated than even because the closer this number was to one the more even the community was. The pie chart in Figure 4 shows the taxonomic composition of the fossil assemblage. This is important because it shows percentages of the individuals found in the entire assemblage and shows how much of what genus and species dominated the paleo-community. 65.0% of the fossil assemblage community was dominated by Mulinia indet., Figure 4. The only species that came close to that was Nucluana indet. with…

    Neanderthal Traumas

Spearheaded by the Germans discovery of the skullcap and limbs, archaeologists gather information, make inferences, and use their imaginations to construct how things use to be. The conditions of the fossils let us know the kinds of conditions people/animals lived in. This can be problematic because for example, Neanderthal bones and deer bones were mixed together with some of the same marks. An archaeologist could have mixed up the bones and given the Neanderthal a characteristic of life that isn’t accurate to them. This could be the case for any fossil that isn’t easily identifiable and archaeologists have to use their “imaginations.”…

    3. Paleontology is the study of fossils, including fossilized plants and animals. Fossil are any perceived remains of a prehistoric organism, in this cause an ancient primate. The dig was lead by Dr. Biren Patel and along with a group of scientist, a partial mandible of an early primate was found in the Kashmir region of India. The fossilized mandible was DNA tested and compared to several modern organism in order to determine the closest living relation. The closest relation to the fossils DNA matched to modern day lemurs. However, this is perplexing as…

    Radiometric Dating Methods

In the area where we discovered these fossils, there are known volcanoes that are active or that were active in Ethiopia. Our first dating method we used was radiometric dating, this method relies on the decay of naturally occurring radioactive isotopes (WoldeGabriel, 2009). When we first uncovered the fossils we saw that is was between two layers of volcanic ash and the ash had been deposited in the fossils. Once the dating method was done each fossil dated back to 4.4 million years ago (WoldeGabriel, 2009). To back up the date, I used another method called Biostratigraphic dating which uses the association of fossils in the strata to determine each layer’s approximate age (Shook, 2016). I used this dating method because I found the fossils in two different location and I wanted to figure out if they had any correlation with each other. The layers revealed that they are both 4 million years old, which makes the age of the fossil accurate.…
