Frequent breaks in the school year allow students and teachers to recharge themselves, be more active in class, and have higher academic achievement. Students and teachers can get tired if they have ongoing class for ten months without a break big enough to recharge. Some of the illnesses that people could have fought off when they were fully rested could make them sick and make more people absent (edweek.org). Absences due to illnesses can be sustained by year round school because of the time to recharge and can raise their academic achievement by having more time in class than when they would usually be sick. Although summer vacation may be fun, having frequent breaks in the school year can help students retain their knowledge and have higher academic achievement (nea.org). One of the biggest changes that would come with year round schooling would be increased use of the school building during times where it was traditionally not used at all. The most obvious time would be during the summer months. Costs for having to run the air conditioning during the summer and heating during the winter would shoot up. This would more so affect larger public schools who adopt the staggered class approach. Since the classes are staggered, when some students leave for their break, others will be returning for it. This would ensure that the school is in constant use all year round, excluding special occasions such as holidays. This would not only increase the costs for maintaining the school property with the air conditioning and heating, but it would increase the costs for school lunches. With some students always being present means there must be food everyday of the year. The money to pay for lunches, one way or another, will have to come from the parents sending their kids to school. Another way parents would be affected economically is through rising house prices. Studies show that the cost to purchase and maintain a house in a neighborhood near a good school is much higher than house costs near schools that don't produce very good students. One of the benefits…

The traditional school schedule is out-dated. Summer vacation finds its roots in farm life. In years past, children would attend school in the months that parents could spare their help. When school let out for the summer, many students would trade in their formal education for one more practical, yet just as important. The schedule made sense then, but fast-forward to today’s society. Less families farm and the ones that do don’t rely as heavily on manpower, especially their children. Those who oppose year round schooling argue that summer camps and family vacations are an important part of growing up and would be missed if summer vacation were done away with (“Leave Those Kids Alone: The Case For Long Summer…

Many schools in the United States are beginning to change their school calendar so their students attend class all year round. The changes still allow the students time off in the summer, but they do not have the three months of break most students in America receive traditionally. Instead, they get a break of a couple weeks in the summer, and the remainder of the time is divided up and put into other breaks throughout the year. All schools in America should switch to a year-round calendar to accommodate the different and higher level of learning needed to be successful in our changing world and society. The traditional school system was designed many years ago when our country was an agricultural nation. Therefore, the school calendar was developed having a long break in the summer so students could assist their family with cultivating crops and other aspects of farm life. The traditional school calendar was not a calendar for higher learning, and should be extended to meet the needs of modern day students. There are many explanations as to why the traditional school calendar should be changed.…

One of the very big reasons for not agreeing with this idea is that if the students go to school all year round without an actual break, it might put way too much into them and they would get too stressed out and probably has a breakdown. There is a reason for having a summer break. During this period, the schools prepare for the next academic year so they undertake cleanup and maintenance exercises which cannot be done during normal class hours. Also, this period offers an opportunity for teachers to seek further education themselves, advancing their knowledge and skill levels for future endeavors. Sometimes, schools use summer vacations to avoid kids being condensed in classrooms in hot weather. Some teachers work side jobs or teach community ed or run a business during the summer vacation, along with take up hobbies or go on vacation. So this goes to show that the summer isn't just for the students, but also for the teachers and their preparations for the next year.…
