The article “School Uniforms: the Good, the Bad and the Plaid”, by Danielle Dreilinger discusses the benefits and hindrances to requiring students to wear school uniforms. In brief, the article, talks about how long the schools in her area have been enforcing policies regarding uniforms. Evans expresses problems that come up with the reasons schools choose to have students wear uniforms. Evans begins acknowledging the problems uniforms may help prevent. However, he follows by stating that there should already be rules in place to avoid such issues as gangs. He argues that uniforms may make gang interactions easier, as they will now be more difficult to identify. Similarly, he also shares that there are more ways than clothing to distinguish between the economic situations of students. As an illustration, some students will have more money, jewelry, or nicer cars. All in all, Evans says that as a principal he has seen students with high achievements who have dressed or groomed in ways which are not necessarily preferable.     Many students today are pressured by the present American youth and pop cultures to dress a particular way. This also means wearing a particular brand of clothing. Due to the popularity of the name brand clothing it is usually extremely costly to consumers. Many companies such as Lands End, JC Penny, Sears, Kmart, and The Gap, have designed a school uniform line that is both affordable and durable for parents and students (Atkins and Schlosberg, 1996).
