School Preporation Speech: A Day When School Start?
// August //

1 day until school starts.

2 weeks since Luka moved in.

"Hey, Thia wants you downstairs. She wants to give us some kind of talk. I think it's the ... sex talk."

I look up from my phone and see Luka, leaning against the doorframe. He looks perfect but I can't have him. Why? Oh, just because Dominic. He's my boyfriend. I haven't seen him all summer and he doesn't know that Luka has moved in with me. I plan on telling him tomorrow at school. SCHOOL! Why did I forget that? I have been counting down the days. I now know what my mom wants to talk about.

"Luka, it's not the sex talk. She is just gonna tell us about dating safety and how hard high school is gonna be. I know because she gives the same speech every year before school starts. Last year she told me about how hard 8th grade was gonna be and it turned out to be really REALLY easy. It'll last about 20 minutes.'' I inform him of my mothers Before School Preporation Speech.

You still have to sit through this and I have someplace to be in an hour so please get your fat ass up."

"Uggggghhh! Do you have to be so rude."

"Just get up. Ill be down stairs whenever you get there."

I get up after snapping a quick pic and posting it to my Snapchat story. I chose to use the fox with glasses filter and caption it, Nerdy and cute! #readyforschooltmrw. I walk at the speed of a turtle because I love to get on Luka's nerves. When I get to the banister, i see him on his phone. If I focus hard enough, i could see what he's doing. Because I'm a nosy person, I focus. He texting someone. A girl.

    32 “Well its actually happening ma’, I’m goin’ back to school.”Rufus said. “I want you to know, I truly am proud of you Rufus.” His mother replied. Curtis and Janet went to a different school then Rufus but he still walked them to school then walked himself to school. On his way to school a car followed him very slowly but Rufus kept walking. When he got to school it looked the same on the outside that it always had. Rufus pushed open the doors at Searingtown School and yelled “I’m back!” All of his friends ran over to hug him. He went down to the office to get a tour he thought he didn’t need because he remembered every single solitary thing about this place. While the tour was going on everything going on was a blur. He looked left, right and left again, admiring the changes the school had made. “Wow” he sighed. “Is there a problem Rufus?” the tour guide asked. Rufus answered, “When I was here the wall paint was all chipped, there were broken windows and holes in the walls.” “Oh ok, well that concludes our tour and this door on your right is your first period class.” The tour guide replied. Rufus walked in and sat at an available seat at the back of the class room. He opened his notebook and took notes even though he didn’t understand anything that was going on. By the time 5th period came around it was time for lunch he was starving. All of his friends called him over and asked him to sit with him. Momma didn’t make him a big lunch because they didn’t have that much food in the house and then needed to split it 3 different ways. Allison who used to have a big crush on Rufus sat right next to him. Mitchell and Charlie sat across from him and Christina, Alisha and Sammy sat around them. When the bell rang he went to his locker and when he got to class he looked out the window and saw the same car that followed him to school. The only person he thought of was Simon. But he didn’t have a car? Rufus ran to the office to explain the…

    How many times has this happened to you; it’s six thirty on a Tuesday morning and your alarm has already gone off twice, you’re still lying in bed and your bus will come in twenty minutes. This is an everyday occurrence at my house. It’s a proven statistic that the average high school student does not get enough sleep. The truth is that we can’t budget all of our activities, sports and homework into one day and still get nine hours of sleep. In order to help boost academic averages among students and make sure students receive enough, rest schools must start later in the morning.…

    I only had a chance to nod before she gave me a hug and told me she loved me. I took that as my cue to exit because I wasn’t going to help her clean up this messy room. Out in the hallway, I told her about the food that I’d purchased for us. Before I could make it down the hall, Imani rushed by me with her dirty laundry. After she had started the load, she washed her hands and joined me in the kitchen to eat. “So how are we going to bring this up to your mom?”…

    BEEEEP BEEEEP! The annoying alarm clock pulsates through my head yet again. It is 7 A.M. on another miserable Monday morning. All I want to do is catapult my alarm across the room, roll over, and fall back into a deep, satisfying slumber. This is a prevalent feeling among many of my peers who agonize about their morning routine as well. School should definitely start at a later hour than it currently does for many different reasons. For instance, teenagers start their day feeling miserable due to lack of sleep. Not only that, but teens are forced into drinking unhealthy caffeine beverages to jolt themselves awake. Finally, students skip breakfast because they are scrambling to be on time for class. These three points illustrate why I strongly feel that school begins too soon.…

    Students ask themselves “why does school have to start so early?” on a daily basis without receiving an answer. Usually, teens find it difficult to fall asleep early and get their 8 hours of sleep, therefore the next day they wake up early, and they're tired all day at school. That is a norm for middle and high school students, and it shouldn’t be. School start times are too early, and need to be change to a later time in order for students to get their full 8 hours of rest.…
