School Counselors
I believe the next important ingredient for multicultural competence is cultural skills. A skilled counselor utilizes the interventions that are client based and which serve clients needs. A positive reaction would be to be connected to those different cultures communication is the key. In multicultural counseling the counselor needs to be more aware his or her limitations in counseling skills. I feel it’s vital to have cultural skills in order to serve multicultural populations in the most productive way to facilitate. By being culturally aware and recognizing how culture will affect the counseling process, this cultural awareness will support the counselor in developing an empathic understanding towards clients. In chapter one we talk about personal qualities of a school counselor. I feel a good counselor can relate if they can understand and communicate within each other. Training in cultural competence can facilitate self awareness.
Cultural encapsulation puts counselors at risk of using stereotypes, becoming judgmental, and imposing their values on their students and parents. Courage and beliefs are what school counselors are challenged about everyday in others and themselves. Counselors have a commitment to diversity and social justice that is discussed in chapter one along with passion. Another goal of the session was to help participants gain new insights into how multicultural social justice affects participants‟ professions and communities. Participants indicated that they gained insight into what it means to be a multiculturally competent counselor and how to put that understanding into action.
Becoming an effective school is being there and being seen by High school students they look to guidance counselors for help in making smart choices, and counselors can assist them in finding the right fit where they will best achieve success. However, when problems of clients of color reside in prejudice, discrimination and racism of employers, educators, and neighbors or in organizational policies or practices in schools, mental health agencies, government, business and society the traditional therapeutic role appears ineffective and inappropriate. After I read the ASCA Model on page 9 of textbook, I knew the leadership, advocacy, teaming and collaboration and systemic change are all what school counselors should focus on. I also learned that school counseling is a profession that focuses on the relations and interactions between students and their school environment with the purpose of reducing the barriers in order to help students to success. In my opinion, the team-member and collaborator is the most challenging for a school counselor in an urban school setting. Because as an effective team-member and collaborator, school counselor work with teachers, administrators and other school personnel to make sure that each student succeeds. However, sometimes working with other school setting educators is not very easy. For example, some teachers do not like to follow the advices from counselors, they believe that their ways are perfect. Hence, they do not want to hear the voice from counselors. I understand everybody has different ideas, but I also believe that our students will get benefits if we can work together as a team. We share our opinions and hear everyone’s advice. Because our goals are same, we all hope each student succeeds. Even though the coloration is challenging and difficult, we still need to do it with our efforts.…

Over the past century society has had many revelations about social justice and integration of multicultural model in counseling. There are numerous events that have impacted the multicultural change in counseling including, civil rights movements, immigration policy, and child labor laws. These policies suggest equal treatment for all cultures. The laws created a divide between different races and this influenced the effectiveness of helping profession. Examining the past from a social learning perspective, I can imagine how society played a huge impact on people’s attitudes. The segregation that existed between African Americans and Caucasian Americans is just one of many influential examples of how social norms impacted interpersonal relations. This carries over to the helping profession because even therapists experienced social learning and the…

In this paper I shall try to explain myself on how I feel on the different topics of perceptions, attitudes, biases, and beliefs of culturally different groups to include other areas of my reactions to knowledge about values, practices, and experiences of individuals who are culturally different from me. What biases, perceptions, attitudes, and beliefs might you hold about culturally different groups? In every work environment there are different cultures of people working together for a common purpose of supporting themselves or a family, and as always there is a different in work ethnic among workers because of the different culture. Many times when more than one person of the same culture is working on the same job they seem to bond and become inseparable during the course of the job. Several times I was placed on a job where I would seem like the outsider. The same people you work with everyday seem to change once joined with others from their culture, the different conversation are carried on and not understanding what they are saying seems to bother me a lot, I have no idea if they are talking about me or the job, a weird feeling of guilt appears to come to me as I walk by them talking in a language that is not recognizable to me. The feeling of not being wanted or the feeling that you are being talked about, because every now and then they look at you and start laughing as if though you are the punch line of their jokes, it is just a weird feeling being the foreigner, but yet you work with the same people every day, and yet you get the feeling that you do not know them as well as you thought you knew them. How might attitudes or perceptions influence your interaction with individuals who are culturally different from yourself? The attitude I have against working with others from a different culture appears to be…

Today, cultural diversity is becoming more of the standard among social and work settings. Understanding culture is essential for relating to others outside of our own social norms, giving us the ability to interact within their social context rather than our own social boundaries. In order for us to understand this idea of culture we must become culturally competent. Cultural competence is best explained as a set of behaviors, viewpoints, and guidelines that intertwine with one another to give a system, group, or individual a more effective way of understanding and interacting in a multicultural environment. Given these points, cultural competence is an essential and dynamic skill for one to acquire in modern society. In function, cultural competence recognizes and integrates the importance of culture at every level, the ability to evaluate cross-cultural relations, the desire to understand cultural differences, the need for ongoing cultural knowledge, and to implement services that meet different cultural needs.…
