School and Business Closings
Growing up in Wisconsin has been cold. There are many times that schools that are cancelled, business open late or do not at all, and the city workers are out trying to get roads cleared off for safe travels. Over the past several years when I changed from going to school to working world I have noticed a big difference. There are many times that children are off school but all the area businesses are still open. Yes we are keeping the children safe but if the parents still have to brave the roads and the weather this still could be an accident. When children do not have to go to school, many of them still have to go to a daycare because both parents work and they still need to be cared for. I feel that if they would shut down most of the businesses in the area as well this would solve the problem where people would not be out on the roads. This would keep not only the kids safe but it would also keep their parents safe as well. If the roads are so bad that schools are closed, I feel it should be too bad to be out driving on the roads. I think this would cut down on a lot of accidents that happen and could save some peoples life. If all area businesses are closed, until the roads are better, there would not be a reason to go out driving anyways unless there is an emergency.

I have been to different states, such as Iowa, where the roads were so bad that there were “No tow Bans” on the roads. This means that if you go in a ditch that your car has to stay there because they will not tow it out until the roads are better. In situations like this I feel that they should have to area businesses closed so that way people are not out driving. While I was in Iowa there were over 50 cars in the ditch within a 1 mile stretch. Many people could have been injured or have even been killed. Why put your life in danger or your employee’s life in danger when being closed for one day could save lives.

School should start later so students wouldn't drive so recklessly and accidents could be reduced. According to Damien Leger “The total cost of accidents related to sleepiness in 1998 is estimated to be between $43.15 billion and $56.02 billion.” (pg1) Students who drive to school need to focus on driving safe. Not only does it put the life of a student in danger, it puts all citizens in danger of losing their lives due to reckless driving. The schools classes need to start later in the day.…

A problem that I think needs to be solved is traffic lights causing the back up of traffic. Traffic lights cause a delay in traffic and cause for traffic back up. It causes everyone to be late when there is no need for it. From personal experience I have been late of several occasions due to backed up traffic because of traffic lights. There are certain spots where traffic lights are not needed and they are only backing up traffic more than needed. Traffic lights turn red even when there is no traffic at the other end of the light. Traffic lights also cause a lot of accidents, such as someone running a red light, etc.…

On this rhetorical critique, I will be talking about the driving community of the state of Florida. As we all know, Florida is infamous for it's terrible accidents. John Couwels and Vivian Kuo, journalists for CNN, prepared an article about the multi-car crash that occurred on January 29th,2012, where 11 people were killed and 46 others were injured. I chose this article because car accidents are a daily event in the state of Florida. However, the roads are spacious and for the most part, well designed. Florida drivers are being held accountable for the wreck due to their lack of safety precautions used while driving through a high fog/smoke area, caused by a nearby forest fire. This article is…

Driving to school has been tough because most kids at my school dont know how to properly drive within the lines and park straight, so dodging a bunch of reckless rednecks in trucks and preppy girls in smart cars is a struggle. It's not getting to school that's the problem for me it's the leaving at the end of the day with the other 1,700 kids that drive. Our school population is about 2,400 something and the more kids that decided to try for a parking permit is only making traffic worse.…

Driving in summertime is a lot different from winter. Many say it’s easier than driving in snow. At this time many people rather have their air conditioner inside their automobile or some enjoy having their windows down or the sunroof. Unlike during winter drivers are usually unafraid to be on the speed limit without worrying about swerving off the road because of the icy roads. In severe situations when roads become too snowy, this issue will not allow anyone to drive. And when there is no driving? That means no one can go to school/work, this becomes frustrating to some citizens because it steals away time,…

On this personal issue i do not agree with changing the minimum driving age. Many teens look forward to getting to drive. It wouldn't be the right thing to do. No i don't think the minimum driving age should be changed. If are legislature changed the minimum driving age we would have to have a lot more transportation for schools. Students wouldn't be aloud to drive to school. If are legislature changed the driving age they would be taking away the only freedom they have. It would also be hard for parents to get there kids from after school activity's. Some parents need there kids to be able to run places for them lick picking up siblings. They also may need them to go to the store to pick things up for them. They…

The environment would be cleaner, and there would be less pollution in the earth’s atmosphere with improvement to roads. There are plenty of resources and ideas to fix everything, but there isn’t much time. We need to act, and make a difference. Our future generation will be safer due to the soundness of design of roads and bridges. The environment will be cleaner we’ll be taking care of our planet as an end result. In the winter it’s too cold and uncomfortable and driving can be challenging at times. Due to weather conditions, such as sleet, humongous among of snow, and slippery roads. The poor conditions are dangerous to us as drivers; when roadways are slippery and wet cars dance from one side to the next in the street. This can result in an accident and may even cause death. I think being patient and vigilant is required when driving behind the wheels. The moment you take your…

A curfew would create a safer life for teenagers who may fail to realize the risk of being outside at night. Most people know the consequences of becoming tired. Being sleep deprived leads to irrational decisions and loss of motor skills. Allowing teenagers to stay out later would increase the risk of poor decisions being made. These decisions could include illegal behavior but also poor social decisions like saying something you wish you could take back. Drowsiness while driving could prove fatal for a teenage driver and any surrounding people due to decreased reaction time. This also does not only effect teenagers when they are driving but also when they are a pedestrian. It has been proven that driving while tired is just as bad as driving intoxicated. Being out later only increases the risks of being in an automobile accident for young drivers or pedestrians. The additional issue of teenage drivers and pedestrians being out at night is visibility. For young drivers, their inexperience and delayed reaction time is only more greatly hindered when it is dark outside. The inability to see pedestrians and large animals, such as deer, in time will be much higher if no curfew is enforced. This could pose a safety threat to the driver as well as people…

Not so long ago in China, Western business executives traveling to the provinces could expect a hearty welcome and a banquet with endless toasts of maotai liquor. In February, however, representatives of General Electric and a dozen other U.S. companies got a taste of the way commercial relations have been changing. They were in Wuhan, a city of 9 million on the Yangtze River, for a seminar on water-treatment technology organized by the U.S. embassy. At a dinner after the meeting they were supposed to have a chance to mingle with top local officials. But at the last minute, Wuhan's mayor canceled his keynote speech and backed out of the gathering. That same day the provincial party secretary and governor begged off a separate event for American Ambassador Jon M. Huntsman Jr. One attendee, who won't be quoted by name, speculates that the Wuhan officials were responding to direct orders from the central government in Beijing not to meet the Americans. The provincial government acknowledges that the original lineup was changed but notes other officials attended the events.…
