Scarface Argumentative Essay
The first screen write attempt for Scarface was with David Rabe. Martin felt the screenplay with Rabe was not going in the direction that he had in mind. Rabe left the script writing and Martin then approach Oliver Stone with Scarface. Oliver was hesitant but Martin had mentioned Sidney Lumet was getting involved to direct and got on board.
When Oliver was approach for the screen writing, he was at a tough place at that point in his life, he was getting ready to leave America and move to Europe. He was highly uninterested in making a remake and was not a fan of the original. However, he met with Bregman and Sidney and Sidney had the idea about how instead of Italians in Chicago and prohibition era, it would be Cubans in Miami and the cocaine world. The MPAA had a very negative feeing about this film; in terms of violence and language used, language was the bigger issue. Several cuts of the movie were made in order to try and get an acceptable rating. There were three cut made and each one got an “X” rating. De Palma made a bold move and went to the press to complain about the MPAA is butchering this movie. He then prepared to go to court. De Palma got psychiatrist specialist to provide means of how children would be affected, as well as getting the head of organized crime from Miami to explain that it was anti-drug film. De Palma won the case and MPAA change the rating on the third cut from an “X” to an “R”. When submitting the final cut, Stone actually told them to send the first original cut and that is what shown to everyone in theaters.
