Scale-up Synthesis and Characterization of
Butyl 2-Cyano-3-(3,5-dichloro-phenyl)-2-propenoate, TSE
Project #131

Introduction:
This report describes the steps taken to create the scale-up of targeted trisubstituted ethylene, Butyl 2-Cyano-3-(3,5-dichloro-phenyl)-2-propenoate compound (#131), and also the characterization methods deployed to the results. This report serves as a critical step in the overall objective of the project; the synthesis of the copolymer. The overall reaction is a base catalyzed Knoevengael condensation of the butyl cyanoacetate and corresponding aldehyde (gkharas/235_14F/235_14F_Lab_2.pdf).

Objective:
The objective of the work that was completed included; the scale-up double amounts of Butyl 2-Cyano-3-(3,5-dichloro-phenyl)-2-propenoate synthesis, isolation, and purification of product of Butyl 2-Cyano-3-(3,5-dichloro-phenyl)-2-propenoate.

Experimental Materials:
The chemicals used in this lab were supplied by Sigma-Aldrich.
-Butyl cyanoacetate (project #131)
-Aldehyde #131, 3,5-Dichlorobenzaldehyde
-Piperidine
-Methanol
-Dichloromethane

Characterization Procedures:
The IR sample of the scaled up TSE product was prepared with 10 m.g. of product, then diluted in 1 m.L. of methylene chloride. Then, two drops of the solution was pipetted onto the center of an IR salt plate (KBr) and let dry under a fume hood. The plate was then scanned by ABB FTLA 2000 FT-IR spectrometer.

Results and Discussion:
Synthesis: Reaction scheme of chemicals used.

Highlights & Observations:
The 3,5-Dichlorobenzaldehyde (2.12g) and Butyl cyanoacetate (2.66g) reagents were mixed into a tared vial with cap. A couple drops of piperidine were then added to the vial. The vial was then heated on a

To prepare 2-bromobutane in part one of the lab, you have to set up a flask apparatus with a thermowell and a Claisen adapter. Attached to the Claisen adapter is a thermometer measuring the temperature in the flask and a vertical condenser for reflux. Add in the reactants to the flask, sulfuric acid, 2-butanol, and ammonium bromide. Heat to 95OC and then maintain temperature for 30 minutes. Then, water was added and simple distillation began. The aqueous layer of the distillate was removed leaving the product, 2-bromobutane. For part 2, two drops of each of the following were placed in 3 different test tubes: 2-bromobutane, 1-bromoutane and 2-bromo-2-methylpropane. In each of the tubes an even amount of silver nitrate is added. Observations of the reactions precipitate are recorded. Same process is done with 2-chlorobutane, 2-iodobutane, and 2-bromobutane.…

I then measured and placed 100 mg (0.10 g) of 1,3-diphenylacetone and 100 mg (0.10 g) of Benzyl into the concial vial. I followed this by placing 0.5 ml of triethylene glycol and then equipped the vial with a condenser as before. The concial vial was then placed in the sand bath on a hot plate stirring and heating at 150-160 degrees Celsius. The reactants were then heated for five to ten minutes. I then removed the apparatus from the heat source and immediately added 100 micro liters of 40% Benzyltrimethylammonium hydroxid-methanol, to the hot reactants inside the concial vial, while gently shaking. As cooling occurred, dark purple (almost black) looking crystals appeared which were the highly conjugated tetraphenylcyclopentadienone. I then obtained the crystals through the use of a Hirsch funnel and vacuum apparatus, and weighed…

Hexaphenylbenzene. Tetraphenylcyclopentadienone (0.100g) and diphenylacetylene (500mg) was placed in a reaction tube and loosely capped. The solid was heated to reflux with a sad bath until the solid turned a brown color. The tube was shaken gently to bring about white solids at the bottom of the reaction tube. Diphenyl ether(2mL) was added and heated until the solid dissolved. The reaction tube was cooled again and had toluene(2mL) added then placed in ice. The product was vacuum filtered, washed with toluene, dried, and weighed.…

The aim of this experiment was to perform a multistep synthesis to form tetraphenylcyclopentadienone. The first step of the reactions was to synthesize benzoin from the condensation of benzaldehyde. A yield of 28.91% benzoin was obtained. The MP of benzoin was 127O-130O C and the IR spectra displayed a carbonyl peak at 3415 cm-1 ,,which represents and OH functional group. The second step of the reaction was to oxidize benzoin to form benzil; this reaction yielded 27.04% benzil. The MP of the benzil was 91O-93O C and the IR spectra revealed no OH functional groups. The last step of the synthesis was a double aldol condensation reaction to form tetraphenylcyclopentadienone; this reaction had a yield of 76.56% and a melting point of 222O-225O C. The IR spectra revealed a ketone carbonyl peak at 1700 cm-1.…

At the beginning of the lab, a micro test tube with and without glass wool was weighed on an analytical balance. A watch glass, crucible, and lid were also weighed. The masses of all the materials needed for the lab were recorded in the data tables of the laboratory notebook. An unknown vial was obtained from the teacher and set to zero on the balance. About 0.6 grams of the unknown was measured into the micro test tube. The analytical balance was set to zero again and then the test tube with the unknown was measured and recorded.…
