When we think of a worldwide catastrophe, we usually think of earthquakes, ice age, and nuclear war. But one that should be recognized with much more severity is poaching. As international editor Richard Swift observed; “We are pushing a hundred species a day, four species an hour, into evolutionary oblivion”. Hunting and capturing animals has been practiced even before recorded history. Where this can be understandable to most in a survival perspective, there are people in this world who abuse this action and slaughter animals for other disrespectful reasons or no reason at all. This is identified as poaching and it should indisputably come to an end.…

Is hunting ethical? As a hunter myself, growing up in a family of hunters, I never answered the question correctly. When asked the question “is hunting ethical?” I would rattle off information and statistics about wildlife population control and the environmental information gathered by hunters, but I seemed to be missing the point completely. As it was recently pointed out, it was like I was being asked what time it was, and answering the date. I wasn’t incorrect; rather, I was just answering the wrong question. Instead, I needed to look at what the actual question was; is the act of hunting ethical, and if not, what are we doing to prevent the mistreatment of animals?…

Governments and organizations have implemented many laws to eliminate the poaching of these animals, but with little success. Since 1997 poaching rates have risen substantially. Throughout the world it is against the law to poach any animal or trade or sell their horns. These tusks, depending on the length and weight, can make poachers extremely wealthy.
