Savages In Lord Of The Flies Essay
“What are we? Humans? Or Animals? Or Savages?”~ William Golding. Throughout the book Lord of the Flies that question will continue to run through your mind. It’s going to leave the reader wondering whether or not they would act the same as the boys in the story. There’s always a right and wrong way to handle whatever life throws at you. You can handle it as a Human, Animal, or a Savage. One of the boys from the story chose to handle it as a Human. Simon’s conversation with the “Beast” can tell us that he was vulnerable and that his theory of what the “Beast” might be was correct.

Simon’s theory was that the “Beast” was in themselves. In chapter five Simon says “Maybe there is a beast”, “What I mean is, maybe it's only us” : (Golding, 126). The boys are fearing something unknown throughout the story. They don’t know if the beast is a animal, person, or object. Fearing the unknown is worse than fearing something that you know exist because you don’t know what to expect from it. Simon says that the beast could be in themselves because none of the boys know each other personally, which shows that none of them knows what each other are capable of. “We do not fear the unknown. We fear what we think we know about the unknown.”

-In this quote Simon expresses his thoughts about how the boys have been acting so far in the story. He believes and states that the beast isn’t anything circular, not anything that moves but just them. In a way what he says is true and this shows that Simon is a kind of person that thinks out of the box, he believes that there is a reason for everything and also an answer for all. The beliefs and thoughts of the other characters affect Simon in a more designated way than any other character probably due to the fact that he is more of a sensitive, spiritual type. The beast is becoming the most important part at this point and has begun a time of terror and evil. The beast in them is the sense of savagery, the knowledge of being able to do all they want, the advantage of being in the wild, more or less not being bossed around by anyone. The other boys received the opinion in a more ironic way and harassed him at the thought, even though it is going to come back to bit them.…

When Simon wakes up he goes up to the mountain top to see that their is a dead parashooter “Simon saw a humped thing suddenly sit on the top and look down at him…. The flies had found the figure..Then as the blue material of the parachute collapsed the corpulent figure would bow forward.. The flies settle once more”.(146) Now there is no beast but the rest of the boys think there is, Simon Is fearless and tries to get to the rest of the boys to get past their fears and realize there is no such thing as the beast on the island. In his haze, he talks to the head of the pig that Jack and his “tribe” staked to “feed” the beast. Simon was always ill, but none of the boys acknowledged it, they just looked at him as different. When he’s alone, he uncovers the actual entity taking over the boys and trying to get into their heads, which is the evil inside them. The pig’s head, or “Lord of the Flies”, confesses that “There isn’t anyone to help you. Only me. And I’m the Beast.” (Golding 143). Simon is internally conflicted with this because he’s the only one who knows this and won’t be able to tell the boys because they won’t believe…

Throughout the story, Simon gave a variety of advice that did not seem important at the moment, but turned out to be substantial as time went by. Simon foreshadowed many events saying, "Maybe there is a beast... maybe it's only us" (80). This also shows the fact that his meditation and deduction came before everyone else's. It was this that led him to the realistic thought that the Beast was within all of the boys, and that there was a little of the Beast in all the boys. Before he was interrupted by Jack, Simon was about to say, "What I mean is. Maybe it's only us. Simon became inarticulate in his efforts to express mankind's essential illness" (89). This tells the Beast was mankind's essential illness, and the boys refused to admit this fact because it was they were afraid of the Beast, and all the consequences of the Beast. Simon also told Ralph, "You'll get back to where you came from" (100). Here he demonstrated once again deeper thought and understanding. Simon shows lots of logic and depth to thoughts, and he can also be referred to as a religious icon.…

Throughout the book, Simon is portrayed as a positive, selfless, caring individual who is constantly the shining beacon of hope and comfort. Simon is very similar to a biblical figure in the way he thinks, through his actions, and his emotions. One of the signs that indicates that Simon possesses similarities to a biblical figure is in chapter 8, page 152, when he is speaking to the Lord of the Flies (the Beast). “…and his gaze was held by that ancient, inescapable recognition…” which could represent the ancient battle between ‘Christ’ or ‘God’ and the Devil; the evil residing within everyone. Also, in that chapter on page 158, it says, “he [Simon] knew his time was coming on… ‘You know perfectly well you’ll only meet me [Lord of the Flies] down there…” which further demonstrates that the Lord of the Flies could be the Devil.…

When Simon is running through the woods, it was dark at night and it was thundering and lightning. This could have made it hard for them to hear Simon and know that it was a person. In the movie the Lord of the flies, there had been some talk of a beast roaming around. They may have thought that it was a beast in the woods since it was dark and stormy and that's why they went ahead and killed him because I did not know he what he was. They were also in a very energized mood in the movie and running around the fire. Which by doing that it was making them more energized and ready to kill. They were dancing and singing with their pointed sticks which meant that they were ready for the beast at any moment. It would be understood that someone may interpret the killing of Simon as a…

“Simon, walking in front of Ralph, felt a flicker of incredulity-a beast with claws that scratched, that sat on a mountain-top, that left no tracks and yet was not fast enough to catch Samneric.” (103). Simon is aware that creatures leave tracks and that a large, fierce, terrifying, evil beast would most likely be able to catch the boys. Simon questions the merit of Samneric’s description of the beast. “However Simon thought of the beast, there rose before his inward sight the picture of a human at once heroic and sick.” (103). As Simon ponders the image of the beast, he sees a human, exactly as he foreshadowed in Chapter 5. “‘What I mean is...maybe it’s only us.’” (89). Simon is able to see through the tale of the beast for what is really is, a human.…

Simon has the power of "seeing" and understanding what the other boys cannot. When the boys worry about the beastie, it is Simon who suggests that the beast might be within them, and it is he who has the encounter with the "lord of the flies," which is so powerful that it makes him faint. He is killed as the other boys celebrate after a hunt. Because his name is associated with Christianity (Simon Peter, Christ's chief disciple), we can understand his death as a sacrifice resulting from the pagan sacrifice of the pig.…
