Satirical Poem
University
Applying to college is a slow and painful process.
Because it's really hard to get accepted, unless
You are better qualified than thousands, and their thousands.
You know; the bank accounts in the Caribbean islands.
I had to study really, really hard for the SAT's,
In order to even stand a shot into any of the ivy leagues.
And luckily,
My family,
Can donate a library,
Or instead of Columbia University,
I'd be off to Albany.
There are whole bunch of these so-called admission committees,
Who skim through your extracurricular activities,
Because that's the only way you might be able to get in with those B's.
Although the wait is lengthy, don't worry, because it really is fair,
You see, because if you're a minority, deny you, they wouldn't dare.
If the letter says "Sorry, but we can not accept you into the graduating class of 2005"
You'll survive!
Because you can still resort to the U.S News and World report,
And look at the next twenty-five schools for comfort.
Worst comes to worst there's a neat little trick,
All you have to do is be born holding a lacrosse stick.
Or if you really want to pull a rabbit out of a hat,
Try complementing that with a baseball bat,
Perhaps even a wrestling mat,
And you'll get in, just like that!
And most importantly you must decide
West coast or East coast and how long is the ride?
But it all pays off at the end, with a job at Price Waterhouse Cooper or Goldman Sachs,
So that at the 10 year high school reunion you'll be getting the last laughs.
What's really amazing though is that with all these great schools this country has to offer
It's amazing that so many kids are still hanging out, smoking on the corner.
Corrupting their minds with drugs and whores
While all their spare time should be spent improving their scores.
Taking test after test after test after test after test,
Making sure their parents standards are met, and of course kept
Forever and ever,
Until one day you too will grow up

Here in America we are supposed to be the absolute best, yet other countries surpass us every day in education. According to Carlos Xabel Lastra-Anadón and Paul E. Take a minute to imagine “Men looking like they had been/attacked repeatedly by a succession /of wild animals,” “never/ ending blasted field of corpses,” and “throats half gone, /eyes bleeding, raw meat heaped/ in piles.” These are the vividly, grotesque images Edward Mayes describes to readers in his poem, “University of Iowa Hospital, 1976.” Before even reading the poem, the title gave me a preconceived idea of what the poem might be about. “University of Iowa Hospital, 1976” describes what an extreme version of what I expected the poem to be about. The images I described above are just some of the horrifying scenes described by Mayes. This poem spoke to me about the pain and suffering patients endure while staying in a hospital (whether it be a mental hospital or a medical hospital) and the horrific images the staff see daily. Mayes uses several types of imagery and literary tropes in his poem to give readers an intense visual sensation as they read his poem. The visuals Mayes placed in my own mind while I read this poem were intensely real and stuck with me long after I studied the poem.…

Lord Bryon once said, “Fools are my theme, let satire be my song”. A satire is a literary composition, in verse or prose, in which human folly and vice are held up to scorn, derision,or ridicule (dic.com). A well recognized satire is George Orwell’s Animal Farm. Orwell wrote this allegorical novella in England when the wartime alliance with the Soviet Union was at its height and Stalin was held in highest esteem in Britain both among the people and government. George Orwell wrote Animal Farm to fuse political purpose and artistic purpose into one whole, thus addressing the downfall of the Russian Revolution which was caused by its corrupt leaders and ignorant citizens.…

“It’s A Woman’s World” written by Eavan Boland is a poem about how woman should embrace their strengths. It’s a Woman’s World” focuses on issues of female identity and how the contributions of women have been overlooked. The speaker of Eavan Boland’s poem, seems to intend irony with the title of this poem, she is not saying this is a woman’s world, but rather speaks of the world from the woman’s point of view. Boland shows her views that women, who are placed in less harsh jobs than the opposite sex, are by no means less important or have easier lives. Eavan Boland is telling woman by this poem to fight for equality, that men and woman have had it equally hard throughout history.…

Explanation: In this poem, the speaker discusses how people will do anything just to get a story. In the midst of crisis and destruction, someone will always be trying to capture on the moment. In the poem the speaker discusses when President Kennedy was shot. Instead of describing it in a somber way, the speaker talks about how the media glorifies the event. The speaker also discusses how as a society we fail to recognize the unsung heroes. “A prince of battle is blown into bloodymeat. No headlines.” The speaker describes the death of a brave soldier during battle. Though his death was heroic no one will ever know the tale. This poem symbolizes the culture of our society and how we put emphasis in the wrong places. While we take the time to recognize celebrities and public icons for their deeds, we fail to give tribute to those who have sacrificed their life for our freedoms.…

Since the early 1900s, the SAT test has been administered each year to high school students in the United States of America (College board 1). The SAT is a standardized test based on a students’ proficiency in math reading and writing. In recent years questions has been raised about whether or not the SAT test can be used to measure any high school students’ skills. It has been argued that colleges should not use a simple four-hour test determine someone’s intelligence or future success in college over his/her high school curriculum. The SAT test often causes emotional distress upon the test-takers and is an overall disadvantage to all high school students.…

In my own experience, I've found that the most frustrating part of applying to college would be the financial aid process. When applying to colleges one quickly realizes that no one is around to help you through all the fine print within applications, no one to help you remember the many passwords and log-in profiles, and nothing can prepare the most patient person for the hours that are spent at the financial aid office, only to find out that there is yet another discrepancy in the process. All this can leave an optimistic student with a heavy heart.…

The American Dream, what is it? Is it realistic? Can everyone attain it? These are some questions that depending on your culture and ethnicity could be answered differently. Imagine being in a culture where the American dream was not attainable due to the color of your skin or the way you looked. Many Americans feel that the American dream is that of money, houses, and cars. For many it is kindness, family and love. Even if your dream is merely to be comfortable with a roof over your head and food on the table, other people’s racism, anger and hatred can stop even the simplest of American dreams.…

By reading just the title I think the poem is going to be about someone dying. I say that because of the words eulogy and veteran. The line “do not stand at my grave and weep” means don’t visit his grave and be sad. The line “I am not there, I do not sleep” means that they aren’t there; they’re not going to show up. The line “I am a thousand winds that blow” is a metaphor which is used to give feeling to the poem meaning that he’s there for his family; that he wants his family to think about him every time they feel the wind blow. The line “I am the diamond glint of snow” is also a metaphor meaning he wants his family to think of him when they see the new, shiny snow of winter. “I am the sunlight on ripened grain” is a metaphor meaning he is warmth and golden. “I am the gentle autumn rain” is also a metaphor but it means that he’s gentle and he’s there when it’s raining. “When you awaken in the mornings hush” is a reminder to the family from the veteran. “I am the swift uplifting rush of quiet birds in circled flight” is a metaphor telling his family to think of him when they feel that uplifting rush. “I am the soft stars that shine at night” is a metaphor reminding his family to think of him when they see the stars shining at night. “I am not there, I DID NOT DIE” means that even though he’s not on earth anymore he plans to remind his family that he loves them through the little things he’s mentioned throughout the poem. I think the attitude of this poem is…
