Satire Essay
Ella Brooks Mrs. English AP Lang. 2/26/2013 Homeless Trash
(A) Americans, most of the world believes we are rich, plentifully fat, stuck up people, who waste food and resources, and our only enjoyment in life is watching reality TV shows such as Honey Boo Boo and Extreme Couponing. Not all of America is like that, just a large amount of it. The truth is thousands of Americans are starving and are without a home. In the rancor winter nights they are forced to subsist on dead bugs they find and dying grass, and stand on a street corner where they hope someone gives them a free burger coupon. At night they sleep on the side of roads, on peoples doorsteps, under people’s porches, and worst of all on street corners. Those cold forlorn nights transform people, those poor savage souls, like dementors but with a beating heart. Being quite antisocial creatures they stand there with open hands and usually a cardboard sign that says “anything helps, God bless”. This is very daunting! When these creatures get roughty they even walk up and down beside stopped cars waiting to turn. Trying not to make eye contact as they creep up past your window your nonchalantly go to press the door lock button, when BAM you lock eyes and a piece of soul just got sucked out of you…’God bless’. We will never become inure to this feeling.
(B) You may ask yourself how do we help these poor creatures?! The answer is simple… dumps. We will send them to dumps where they can salvage cardboard boxes! This will be a magnificent mansion to them! They can construct the houses of their most evocative dreams, and we will be the heroes that provide them the tools. This is a fantastic solution to this terrible epidemic by helping out these poor little guys.
(C) They will no longer be inexpedient, everybody will feel safe. Crime will go down because they will not be fighting each other over the penny that a 40 year old mother of Mexican descent accidently dropped. During the course of one

Obesity is a major epidemic in America. American’s are known for their obsession with food. At church last Sunday, the pastor was preaching on the topic of “fasting”. Fasting would be defined as the abstinence from eating certain or all foods in an effort to rely solely on God for inner strength. The pastor talked about how we as Americans are constantly looking for our next meal. We are always anticipating when and what we are going to eat. We even schedule our entire days around mealtime. Americans are essentially obsessed with food. In an effort to change this aspect of our culture, I have devised a three-part plan.…

The balance between amusement and critique is a central dynamic of successful satire, as it is through humour that the satire may censure its target, prompting the respondent to revaluate their own perspective with that of the satirist. Through his hyperbolic depiction of the nepotism inherent in the diplomatic posting system in The Ambassador, Sitch’s series The Hollowmen reveals the malleability of political values. Sitch furthers his satire of such political expediency through his ironic depiction of the policy making process in Rear Vision in which he exposes the artifices that characterise the modern Australian political landscape. Similarly, Moir’s reductio ad absurdum critique of Australian immigration policy in his cartoon Australian Values Test challenges the exclusivism entrenched in facile notions of Australian identity. Ultimately both texts emphasise the distinction between parody and satire, suggesting that whilst both forms rouse amusement satire has the additional function of critiquing the prevailing facades of society. Through his depiction of the nepotistic machinations of the Central Policy Unit in The Ambassador, Sitch exposes the tension that exists between political necessity and the self-serving agendas of politicians. In highlighting the dilemma presented by the Prime Minister’s eagerness to appear non-partisan by stopping “clapped-out party hacks getting plum overseas postings” and the need to “make one more”, Sitch establishes the quintessential political conflict between an idealistic desire for transparency with the practical necessity for deception. Such a conflict is evident in Sitch’s use of Warren and Phillip, preeminent caricatures of political naivety, as foils to the dissembling pragmatists Tony and Murph. Sitch heightens this conflict through the scene-cut from the scrupulousness embodied…

Her clock screamed Get Up! She rolled out of bed 20 minutes earlier than she normally got up for school. On any other day she’d be slapping at the snooze button, but today was a special day. Today was a milestone; she was finally able to drive to school alone. She was so excited to show off a car she brought back to life with her own hands and to rid herself of the imposed parking restrictions. After she cycled through her morning routine, she slipped into the silky black car seat, turned over the engine, shifted into drive and pointed her baby to school. A newfound sense of freedom flowed through her veins as she watched the homes and fields roll by as if seeing them for the first time. The sight of the parking lot at school was soon in view, which triggered a sudden anxiety attack manifested by her breakfast thinking about making an appearance. Were the parking police going to again verbally accost her? Thankfully she quickly settled into a parking spot where she knew like-minded car lovers would take care of her chariot. Taking one last peak at her prize she noticed a shabby looking van lurking behind her car. Making a U-turn, she strolled over to the man in the van. As she neared the man the flood of questions came pouring out of his mouth, “Where is your parking pass? Why are you here? Do you realize there is not enough room for people like you when parking lots are this full?” The only remark she had she held back as she made her way back to her car. All those thoughts of the freedom she had earlier were swept away by the flood of questions and accusations. There had to be a solution for people who had to drive to school; a solution that would prevent delinquents like herself from plaguing the parking lot.…
