!
ANS 1. ESG(Enterprise Resource Group), was formed by HP in 1997 to focus on enterprise computing. It provided more than 1.3 Million UNIX based systems(HP-UX).
The sales of HP were almost up to $10B in 1997 where the total market was estimated to be over $60B. !
!

HP was the lead supplier of UNIX based servers through the years 1993 to 1997.

On the other hand, SUN Microsystems were also competing with HP for UNIX servers and were emerging strong in the market. By summer 1998, SUN was a leading UNIX server vendor with their own proprietary operating system SOLARIS. They captured around 40% of the market share.!
!

ESG evolved itself by combining UNIX systems with RISC chip which increased

the performance and speed of operation. ESG built complex and necessary application systems for businesses and for enable information technology infrastructure through web services for future.!
!

To compete with SUN and other independent server vendors (ISV’s), HP

reinstated focus on ESG to develop UNIX-RISC based computer systems.!

Q.2) Why did HP get involved in developing IA-64 architecture? Analyze the assumptions and the strategy which led to their initial involvement decision.!

!
ANS 2. HP was one of the leading RISC-UNIX based computer system vendor in contrast with SUN Microsystems, IBM and other ISV’s. Whereas Intel’s Pentium Pro
Microprocessor and WINDOWS NT combined to form a CISC based computer system known to be as WINTEL which were capturing the low-end market due to its low cost.!
Though it captured only 9.3% of market, sales of products increased by 66% from 1996 to 1997.!

HP has a wide variety of products and services. They offer so many that it can easily still earn profits even during times of recession and economic downturn. HP has been able to compete more aggressively and beat out competitors by reducing costs. HP is extremely active in research and development which coincides with its GO to be committed to innovation. Lately, HP has partnered with other leading technology companies to leverage cost and maximize customers experiences. HP has introduced several green initiatives to maintain its objective in corporate citizenship. These citizenship initiatives are based on product reuse and recycling, climate and energy, and supply chain responsibility. HP also has a huge focus on internet protocol (IP) technology. This has led to some large success in leveraging networks for voice and video communication. One of HPs weaknesses is its stock price. Due to the recent recession, the fluctuation in HPs stock price is a major weakness because it is an indicator of uncertainty for the company. Due to the size of HPs workforce, it is also difficult to manage and maintain a workforce that is globally dispersed. Revenues that are earned abroad are also difficult…

The story of how UNIX came to be is a long, but interesting tale. During the mid-1960’s, the first multi-user operating system called Compatible Time-Sharing System (CTSS) was created by Fernando Corbato at the MIT Computation Center. Although CTSS was highly influential for its time, it eventually failed, but not before a second generation operating system called Multiplexed Information and Computing System (MULTICS) was developed. MULTICS was started as a joint research project with AT&T Bell Laboratories, General Electric, and MIT, but due to the high maintenance costs associated with it, AT&T Bell Laboratories pulled out.…

INTEL founded by Robert Noyce & Gordon Moore in1968 to build Semiconductor memory products, and it distinguished by its ability to make semiconductors and its first products in 1969 was the (SRAM) which was nearly twice as fast as earlier Schottky diode implementations by Fairchild and the electro technical Laboratory in Tsubaka, Japan. In same year Intel introduced ROM and the first commercial (MOSFET) Silicon gate SRAM chip. Intel 's business grew during the 1970s as it expanded and improved its manufacturing processes and diversified its products, still dominated by various memory devices. While Intel created the first commercially available microprocessor (Intel 4004) in 1971 and one of the first microcomputer in 1972, by the early 1980s its business was dominated by dynamic random-access memory chips. However, increased competition from Japanese semiconductor manufacturers had, by 1983, dramatically reduced the profitability of this market, and the sudden success of the IBM personal computer convinced then-CEO Andrew Grove to shift the…

    Evolution of Microprocessor

The Collegiate Webster dictionary describes microprocessor as a computer processor contained on an integrated-circuit chip. In the mid-seventies, a microprocessor was defined as a central processing unit (CPU) realized on a LSI (large-scale integration) chip, operating at a clock frequency of 1 to 5 MHz and constituting an 8-bit system (Heffer, 1986). It was a single component having the ability to perform a wide variety of different functions. Because of their relatively low cost and small size, the microprocessors permitted the use of digital computers in many areas where the use of the preceding mainframe—and even minicomputers— would not be practical and affordable (Computer, 1996). Many non-technical people associate microprocessors with only PCs yet there are thousands of appliances that have a microprocessor embedded in them— telephone, dishwasher, microwave, clock radio, etc. In these items, the microprocessor acts primarily as a controller and may not be known to the user.…
