Santiago The Shepherd Monologue
I, Santiago the shepherd, have finally arrived at the old, destroyed, and abandoned church with my flock of sheep. An enormous sycamore tree lies where the sacristy used to be. I might as well spend the night here as it is beginning to become dark. When I awoke from my slightly uncomfortable slumber, it was still dark. A strange dream kept on waking me up. I have only had the dream twice. However, the worst part of the dream is that I never see the ending of it. I always wake up before I see it. Since I am already awake, I shall go and wake up some of my sheep. In some odd way, the sheep seem to follow the same routine that I follow. For example, as I began to wake up, the sheep began to wake up. I also feel that the sheep understand what I say or do.
I only talked to my sheep about one subject lately: the girl, the merchant’s daughter. A year ago, a friend referred me to a merchant that needed some wool. Once I arrived at the merchant’s location, he seemed busy and told me to wait until the afternoon. Thus, I decided to wait on the steps nearby. The merchant’s daughter appeared behind me; we started to talk for two hours. Our conversation was about our own experiences through life. During that moment, I wished that the day would never end. Since I only have a few more days until I see the merchant’s daughter; I got a haircut and finished some errands. While walking to Tarifa, I remembered that there is a woman who can interpret dreams. I decided to visit the woman in hopes of figuring out the meaning of my dream. When I arrived at the woman’s house, she took me to a room in the back of the house. Inside the house, was a sacred picture of Jesus’ heart. The woman began to pray a gypsy’s prayer which alarmed me.
