12 February 2015 Youth Leadership: The perpetuation and performance in this century
Youth leadership is a distinct and stringent responsibility. Today’s youth still face many attitudinal challenges to self-empowerment. Both the problem and the solution begin at home with their parents. Leadership training must start from an early childhood, as these young adults learn to take gradual responsibility for their own decisions. Only through self-determination, can these youth eventually achieve leadership in their respective communities. In addition to parental guidance, society has responsibility to create opportunities for these young adults to exercise good leadership. This essay is completely about how leadership has become an essential authority and how it is effecting the youth of this century.
This essay will basically contain 3 sections, where in the 1st section I will provide an overview and the history of youth leadership over the centuries and its effectiveness. In the 2nd and 3rd section I will discuss about the perpetuation and the performance of youth leadership in this century
Over centuries many pronounced companies have achieved wondrous victory through youth leadership. CHCI, PepsiCo and the PepsiCo Foundation have partnered since the founding of CHCI in 1978, transforming the lives of more than 500 young Latinos who have gone on to contribute to U.S. society in diverse fields from health and education, to forging public policy on Capitol Hill and serving as elected officials. The new five-year grant from the PepsiCo Foundation extends this long-standing partnership and demonstrates its strong commitment to developing effective and successful leaders who will help shape the future success of America. With this extraordinary grant, PepsiCo and PepsiCo Foundation’s historical investment in CHCI totals more than $4.4 million. (Eresources, 2014)
For over 50 years HOBY has been known as the country’s top youth leadership development organization. Founded in 1958 by veteran actor Hugh O’Brian, HOBY’s mission is to provide lifelong leadership development opportunities that empower individuals to achieve their highest potential. O’Brian set out to help young people make a difference and become positive catalysts for change—in the home, school, workplace, and community. Now, with more than 375,000 alumni leading the way, HOBY is respected worldwide for its youth leadership programs. (Wordpress, 2014) The longevity of youth leadership has vastly kept their existence and has also been successful. It has given immense benefits to everyone who was involved as well as those who aren’t. Making use of the huge technological advancement of the twenty-first century such strategic and innovative collaboration of youths and these interested groups is set to top into the vast human resource potential in young people. The effectiveness of this youth leadership also had astonishing results. Well-designed and well-run youth development programs promote youth leadership by involving youth in needs assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. A growing number of organizations include youth on their boards of directors. Effective programs engage all participating youth in constructive action through activities such as service learning, arts, and athletics; and emphasize common values such as friendship, citizenship, and learning.
Research on factors promoting resilience in youth at risk has shown that the consistent presence of a single caring adult can have a significant positive impact on a young person’s growth and development. Well-designed programs promote positive relationships with both peers and adults.
Youth development is a process that prepares a young person to meet the challenges of adolescence and adulthood and achieve his or her full potential. Youth development is promoted through activities and experiences that help youth develop social, ethical, emotional, physical, and cognitive competencies. Youth leadership is part of the youth development process and supports the young person in developing: (a) the ability to analyze his or her own strengths and weaknesses, set personal and vocational goals, and have the self-esteem, confidence, motivation, and abilities to carry them out (including the ability to establish support networks in order to fully participate in community life and effect positive social change); and (b) the ability to guide or direct others on a course of action, influence the opinions and behaviors of others, and serve as a role model

In 2008, he joined the City Heroes Program, the high school equivalent of Young Heroes, during my term as a Senior Corps Member and Program Leader for City Heroes. Not only was Luis a consistent participant, he was a leader among his peers. He met with us weekly to plan activities and contribute…

One organization that I’m involved at Goucher College is the Futuro Latino Learning center (FLLC). This program provides opportunities specifically to the Latino community of Baltimore County. The students of Goucher College teach classes and there is ESL and basic computer training. Students are not only helping the Latino community but they get the opportunity to speak Spanish and improve their language skills. In my first year of college I helped with teaching a class; I was the assistant tutor. Now this year I am helping out with the children program playtime and cultural program. While the adults are taking their classes they drop off their children. This program provides a safe space and for children to learn about their culture and speak…

Being part of an institution such as Latino Scholars of Promise has instilled many values in me. The Latino Scholars of Promise is a program that is dedicated to preparing soon to be college students for the future by developing leadership and preparing them for the real world. It has affected me as an individual and has affected other aspects of my life. Being part of a program like this one has helped me view my surroundings in a different way. I am able to see things differently and act in a way in which those beliefs could be used. Without the help of this program I would not be able to learn and put into practice the four values I hold dear today: perseverance, valor and leadership. There are so many instances in which I am driven and determined to use them such as my education, helping others succeed, and most importantly inspiring my…

(PEW Hispanic Center, 2012) While the Latino population continues to grow, on average the educational attainment of the Latino community continues to lag behind that of the rest of the nation. The differences in achievement gap between Hispanics and non-Hispanics begin as early as kindergarten and continue through high school (Schhneider B, Martinez S, Ownes A., 2006, p.). The recent attention on Latino educational attainment and career identity brings to forefront not only questions about equal opportunity and education attainment gaps, but also the impact that these gaps have on our national economy (Castaneda-Flores, 2013, p.), and the implications of K-12 public schools to provide comprehensive career development for a diverse student population. The failure of educational policies to effectively address the unique challenges of Latino students, as it relates to attainment of career decision-making self-efficacy skills, within the educational system makes it unlikely for Latinos to achieve postsecondary educational success and therefore to improve, overall in socioeconomic status…

Perhaps giving independence by parents to children can be considered the second decisive and persuasive factor for children to become avid leaders.
