Sand density lab
Sand Density Lab- Nick Schlosser

I. Overview- Finding the volume of regular shapes and irregular shapes using different methods like the water displacement method.

Procedure- See data chart
III. A.)With a ruler of calipers calculate volumes of regular and irregular objects- fill in chart. B.) Record data from another group to compare data for same object.

Preliminary questions- 1. Explain how you propose we go about measuring the volume of sand(as sand has air around it. What is the water displacement method, describe how you do i?- You put sand in first then you put water in a graduated cylinder then put hand on the end of it and shake it up until it has no air around it. And water displacement method is when you see how much the volume of an object is by having a cup of some sorts filled to the top then put the object in it slowly, then how much water bleeds out is the volume of the object.

Post lab questions-

What is the difference between a measurement and a calculation? Give an example from your lab work- A measurement is the numbers you pull of of the object and calculation is what you put those numbers into to get another answer, and with how we measured and object then got the water displaced and did mass over volume and calculated that out.
How do your results compare to the work of another group? Write out the name of the other group and their numbers. The numbers were different because we used different objects of the same material, like we both used iron but mason got 48.27 grams for a beginning weight when we got 108.15 grams, because they were different shapes or something, But the calculations we put those measurements in were the same though, and we both got different answers, i got 32.54 g/ml and Mason got 12.54 g/ml Explain the difference of your data from the other groups data?- The masses and and volumes were different causing the densities to be different because we used different sizes of the same type of

Part 2: I used a graduated cylinder on the tarred scale empty and then with both water and isopropyl alcohol to determine the mass of both and calculated their densities. Next, I measured the length, width, and height of a magnet to determine volume. I then used the water displacement method by filling a cylinder with water and then placing the magnet in and recording the difference in the water level to determine volume and density. Lastly, I used Archimedes’ method to by recording the mass of a metal bolt then placing it in water and observing the displacement. I then converted this to density of water and repeated with a magnet.…

Once all of the data is recorded one will have to find the densities from their data. To do this one will have to know the formula to calculate density. This formula is p=m/v. Density is equal to mass divided by volume. One will use a calculator to divide the mass they found by the volume they found. With the newly calculated densities one must compare their calculated densities to the known densities on the data table and record the results.…

Question 4: Both the height and diameter of the cylinder were taken to find the volume; five times for both measurements. Vernier calipers were used to get these measurements by clamping the cylinder between the jaws of the calipers. By looking at the mark of the zero, in relation to the main scale, the line best lined up with a line from the main scale was taken down. Getting these numbers we can further calculate values for average and accuracy of the length of the cylinder.…

In the first part of the experiment, we should measure the density of some irregularly shaped chunks of rock. The Weight of rocks is 18.769g. To calculate the volume of rocks, We make use of Archimedes Principle: that is, an insoluble solid will DISPLACE a volume of water equal to its own volume. The volume before adding rocks and after adding rocks are 50 ml and 58 ml. Hence the volume of rocks is 58 cm3 minus 50 cm3 which is 8 cm3. The density is 18.769g divided by 8 cm3 which is 2.34g/ cm3. The chunks of rock should be returned to the waste beakers after use and we should not pour them into the sinks.…
