Problem: Can water float on water? Introduction: Can water float on water some say ye because ice can float but we are talking about water on top of water. The salt water and fresh will have different effects on the experiment. The experiment also see if the warmer the water is the different way it look.
Purpose: The reason that I am doing this project is to see if water can float on water and to see the water at different densities, and salinity. To see if the salt water would sit on the fresh water and how it would reaction to the effect of the experiment. Also to see if the salt water will mix with the fresh water like an estuary when the water mixes with the salt water .
Background: Different bodies of water have different amount of salt in this is called different salinities. Salinity is expressed amount of salt in 1000 grams of water. So if there 1 gram of salt in water and 1000 gram of water the salinity would be 1ppt (Part per Thousand). An estuary is when fresh water connect with salt water. Estuaries and are surrounded them are transition from land and sea.
Hypothesis: If the water can sit on top the water than that would prove that the water cannot mix because of the different types of effects.
Materials: Clear bottles (4) Sturdy Plastic Permanent marker Laminated index card
Table salt
Containers (2)
Spoon
Teaspoon spoon
Food coloring (1)
Tap water Procedure: 1. First label the bottles fresh and salt also the containers the same.
2. Make you ocean water by adding salt to the container that says salt
3. Add tap water to the fresh containers.
4. Add 5 drops of food coloring to each containers.
5. Fill both bottles completely filled with colored water.
6. Now turn the bottles upside down and observe them.
Data: 6 teaspoons of salt to the container the salt is blue the fresh red the salt water took longer to go down then the fresh the salt was more denser.
