Safety Net
The government’s duty is to protect its citizens and ensure the safety and welfare of the people being governed. There is no doubt that the government must provide citizens with a social safety net. Due to the debt and amount of government spending, some may disagree but the government can find other safer ways of making sure the right people in need and deserving of the help provided by social safety nets. Social security, Medicare, Medicaid, unemployment benefits, free clinics, public education, free or reduced breakfast or lunch, etc., are all needed and makes the United States a place where people feel safe and know that their government can help them when needed. Public education and free/reduced lunch are two things that America is looked up to for, there are so many places where kids have no education or people can’t afford it and they admire a place like the US where it is thrown at us. Without public education, what would be the future of this country? School provides you with education and also allows you to be given food, school is our second home and we should never take any of these social safety nets for granted. Students can have fair chances and hope for their futures, thanks to the government. There are problems that come along with the safety net but that doesn’t imply that everyone using it, uses it wrongfully. There are people out there in need of this and without it would be dead right now. We cannot punish the innocent for the wrong doers actions. According to an article, dozens of benefits programs provided an average of $6,538 for each man, woman, and child in the county in 2009, a 69 percent increase from 2000 after adjusting to the inflation. The government safety net was created to keep Americans from extreme poverty, but the sad part is that the poorest households no longer are receiving the majority of the government benefits.
