Safe Drinking Water
Issue: Safe Drinking Water

When looking alot of the big issues within today 's environment I took great interest in safe drinking water. There is not that much of safe drinking water to efficiently hydrate every single person on the planet. Alot of third world countries, especially within Africa and Asia, have issues with their own water supplies being safe to drink. Now if there is safe enough water, they may not be readily available or within a close area to where people are living. One of the reasons why safe drinking water is such a high concern has to deal with the pollution in the water and what the pollution causes. Research done by many organizations, such as the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS), have found out that over 75 percent of all diseases in developing countries arise from polluted drinking water. How and what are some of the solutions that are going to be taken into action? Many Organizations have taken the steps to working towards a solution and some even have already initiated their solutions. Some of the Organizations that have focused on the issues are: Global Water, EPA, TWAS, The United Nations Children 's Fund (UNICEF), and Operation Safe Drinking Water. To start off, I am going to introduce to you Global Water. Global Water is an international, non-profit, humanitarian organization. This organization was founded in 1982 and their primary focus started with creating safe water supplies, sanitation facilities, and hygiene-related facilities for rural villagers in developing countries. This volunteer-based organization has quite a few successful projects utilizing water and sanitation as a tool to create sustainable socioeconomic development in the poor rural villages. The organization became pretty successful base on their "Technology Push" program. This program consisted of low-maintenance, state of the art, water equipment that would be

Background: According to the Millennium Development Goals Report 2012, 783 million people, or 11 per cent of the global population, remain without access to an improved source of drinking water. Also the United Nations has long been addressing the global crisis caused by insufficient water supply to satisfy basic human needs and growing demands on the world’s water resources to meet human, commercial and agricultural needs (un.org). In this experiment water quality and contamination of groundwater was investigated. First, I observed the effects that many pollutants have on groundwater. I predict that in this experiment the oil and vinegar will create the large amount of contamination in the water, while the laundry detergent will just create an aroma smell to it. Considering the smells and color to these ingredients I think that it will cause the water quality to have a bad smell and cause the water to be very cloudy. Once filtering the contaminated water, the water will be clear and purified. Second, I will experiment water treatment and filtering. I predict that once the contaminated water is treated and filtered that it will leave me with less contamination or none at all. Then for the last experiment, I will determine the difference between bottled water and tap water to discover any contamination. I predict that the tap water will be the most contaminated and with the most chemicals in it, while the bottled waters; Dasani and Fiji will be completely filtered and free of any chemicals.…

A health concern involving the quality of drinking water in our community has been brought to our attention. The Safe Drinking Water Act (42 USC § 300f), was passed by Congress in 1974 to protect public health by regulating the nation’s drinking water supply. In 1986 and 1996 the law was amended and required many actions to protect drinking water and the sources of drinking water such as rivers, lakes and ground water wells. The Safe Drinking Water Act authorizes the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) to set national standards for drinking water to protect people against both natural and man-made contaminants that can be found in drinking water. Because of the Safe Drinking Water Act, America's drinking water is safer than ever before.…

Do you know how much water the average American uses in one day? From showers and flushing toilets to cooking and drinking, the average American uses about 100 gallons of water per day (“Water.org”). Additionally, they know that their water will always be clean. Now imagine Haiti, where the average person lives off of only 4-5 gallons of water per day, which may or may not be clean water (“Water.org”). Millions of people in Haiti suffer every day due to a lack of clean, usable water. Fortunately, to help combat this terrible human rights abuse, there’s a non-governmental organization called Water.org that builds wells in Haitian villages to ensure a long-lasting solution to the issue. Even though the organization is doing wonderful work, access to clean water continues to be a tragic issue in Haiti.…

I am involved in the Thirst Project which builds freshwater wells across the world. Through the Thirst Project I have participated in different events as well as going to different businesses to try and get donations. My involvement in the Thirst Project has really grown since I started volunteering at the Boys and Girls Club because I am able to see how important it is for these kids to get food because their economic circumstances at home may not allow for it. This is much more drastic in the places where the Thirst Project is trying to build the wells because of how contaminated their water is. There is a constant struggle to decide between drinking the polluted water and getting a disease or not drinking the water and run the risk of…

Imagine living in a village where clean water is rare and being healthy is lucky. In America we take clean water for granted everyday although there are millions of people in the world where having water is okay for them, whether or not it is clean. There are several organizations to help clean the water and help make healthier populations.
