Sacrifice In The Handmaid's Tale And Children Of Men

Very often in life sacrifices are made. Everyone makes sacrifices, whether its substantial or minor. People sacrifice for each other for a number of reasons, examples include expressing love, and care. Sometimes people sacrifice for themselves because they feel it's Obligatory. Both The Handmaid’s Tale and Children Of Men show how sacrifice was an eminent trait that was utilized often . In The Handmaid’s Tale, Nick, The Commander, and Ofglen expressed how sacrifice is essential and how it reoccurs. In Children Of Men, Jasper, Miriam, and Theo all demonstrated how important sacrifice is in life.

During the night, the Commander and Offred would play scrabble, read magazines in his room. These activities in the Republic Of Gilead are highly illegal for women to do, so the fact the Commander would risk being caught is a substantial sacrifice. For once in a society like Gilead, all the Commander wants to do is treat the handmaid (Offred) just as a regular human being. Unfortunately, this does not happen everyday in this society. The Commander even took Offred to the nightclub. Surprisingly, the Commander showed care for Offred by doing all this, and also treating her with respect and as a normal human. The acts the commander took to show Offred that he cared for her exemplifies he would sacrifice being caught with her. An example of how sacrifice is eminent in Children Of Men is when Miriam created a distraction when Kee had her contractions. In order for Kee not being caught, Miriam had to cause a bit of a scene which lead to her being escorted off the bus. Miriam understood the importance of Kee’s child was, so she took the necessary sacrifice. Miriam knew Theo could not make the sacrifice because he was the one who knew where to lead Kee into safety. Miriam shows how in order to sacrifice, that you must understand it is for the greater good, and that (in this case) there was no other option but to create a scene. As much how terrifying the act of committing suicide was, no one could have blamed her for what she had done. She did not want to go through anymore than he has been going through at the time. It was an unfortunate death, but Ofglen believed she did what was right for herself. On another note, Theo from Children Of Men sacrificed his life in order to get Kee to the boat. Theo led her to safety even through the harshest times of war. He did his best and successfully led her to the boat. It may cost him his life, but he knew what he do was brave, right, and condemnable. For that, he was able to die knowing his sacrifice would not go in vain. Theo was so close to be joining her but unfortunately, he could not hold on because of the wound he sustained during the battle. Both Ofglen, and Theo made sacrifices that they felt were needed in their life. Both sacrifices were very different. One was to benefit oneself, the other to benefit the greater good. Both examples however show how sacrifices are eminent.

It is no secret both The Handmaid’s Tale and Children Of Men both exemplify how sacrifices are a trait that is notable and utilized effectively. In The Handmaid’s Tale, Nick, The Commander, and Ofglen show how sacrifices are essential in the Republic Of Gilead, and
