Kubler- Ross 1 RUNNING HEAD: KUBLER-ROSS Eminent Person Paper on Elisabeth Kubler-Ross We are going to first look at Elisabeth Kubler-Ross’s childhood and some of the events that shaped her thinking and eventually her work and career. We will try and list her work experiences and her outlook toward death and dying. Of course I feel that any words that could be conveyed in reference to Elisabeth are not adequate for anyone to get the true picture of just how great a person she was. Elisabeth’s brother’s education was preparing him to enter the business world. Elisabeth and her sisters were sent to local schools to prepare them for marriage. “It was as if they were transfixed by her,” he said. (BMJ, 2004, p. 627) She formed the Ross Medical Association and was President of this foundation in Flossmoor, Illinois from 1973-1976. In 1977 Elisabeth created “Shanti Nilaya”, which means The final home of peace. (Kubler-Ross, 1978, p. 146) This was a healing center for the dying and their families located in Escondido, California. She moved to California from Chicago and the center was funded by the profits from her lectures and books. The center remained open until 1995. Elisabeth was also President of the Elisabeth Kubler-Ross Center in Head Waters, Virginia which she founded in 1977. While running both of these centers Elisabeth worked for a time as a clinical Professor of Behavioral Medicine and Psychiatry at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. Throughout all of her endeavors Elisabeth never forgot her struggle as a young child with pneumonia, and she knew that the comforts and love one could receive in the home setting did, for her, and could make the difference in the psychological well being of the
