Analysis of Ruth Forman's 'Poetry Should Ride the Bus'

In the poem Poetry Should Ride the Bus, Ruth Forman beautifully writes about what poetry should be. Each stance describes a beauty and intensity of emotion regarded as a characteristic of Ruth’s life. Each stance of the poem is a significant memory that Ruth had at a certain point in her life. The first stance is a memory of when she was a child; the second stance is a memory when she was a teenager, and so on. The dehumanizing oppression of African Americans in the southern states of America during the first half of the 20th century is regarded as one of the saddest chapters in the history of the nation. They were denied their Human and Civil Rights to a most severe degree, including the regulation of the very basic right of suffrage. African Americans were also denied equality in the classroom, stemming their ability to develop as a race. Ruth touches on this subject on various lines such as being “not so educated” and “riding the bus”. Ruth does a magnificent job of using poetry to describe this social injustice. One unique thing about this poem is that it does not pertain to any one specific person. The content is vague, and the subject of the poem is “poetry.” It is not Ruth who should be riding the bus, but rather the poetry. This symbolizes the importance of community because anyone can relate to it. Ruth also symbolizes community with the imagery used in the poem. Ruth writes about “hopscotch in a polka dot dress” and “sitting through a whole photo album.” These are all memories that most people can relate to. I thought the poem Poetry Should Ride the Bus was very powerful and beautifully written. The content is so vivid and direct, and you can easily paint a picture in your head.     Angelou, through this empowering poem, has insightfully discussed and surely raised awareness of the social issue of racial prejudice - which is, in fact, sadly still present in our world. In furtherance to this, Angelou has also been able to convince us that not only is racial prejudice driven by corrupt ideals and beliefs but rather it is rooted deeply in hatred and jealousy. During the era in which Angelou lived in, there were considerably few advocates and activists for people who were treated with such cruelty all due to their race. And as outlined in Angelou’s poem, the social situation during the Jim Crow Era was appalling.     For many years, this country has been unjust and humanity has not always been treated equally. Dudley Randall, who is most famous for his literary contributions, wrote a poem called "Ballad of Birmingham" representing the inequality and racism during the early 1960's (Encyclopedia.com). The main themes of the poem are racism and the struggle of African Americans around the time of the civil rights movement in 1964 (Encyclopedia.com). Randall's poem focuses on a child that lives in Birmingham, Alabama who wishes to participate in a freedom march. The mother refuses to let her go, because it is too dangerous for someone her age. Although the streets are not safe, the mother tells her daughter to go to the church believing nothing will harm her in the place of God.     Privileged whites in America were still looking down at the blacks and young black poets writing reflects this. Langston Hughes “Let America Be America again”, tells us of the way the blacks wanted to be treated and how each were promised their America when the civil war ended along with slavery. In the poem the lines 31-35 speak of how black were still being treated, “I am the farmer, the bondsman to the soil, I am the worker sold to the machine. I am the Negro, servant to you all. I am the people, humble, hungry, mean-Hungry yet today despite the dream”. (Hughes) This speaks of how the black person felt everybody was still being treated and how each one were continually being treated specially during the Civil Rights Movement of the 60’s.
