The world of beauty pageants was first introduced in 1921 with the Miss America Pageant. It became increasingly popular and by 1961, the first Little Miss America pageant was held in New Jersey. Originally, the young girls were between the ages of thirteen and seventeen, but as the pageants grew, younger girls started entering. Today, there are more than 250,000 children who compete in pageants, 100,000 of those children being under the age of thirteen (By the Numbers). Many supporters of child beauty pageants are the parents of the contestants. They argue that beauty pageants increase their child’s confidence and teach them “skills such as going out in a crowd, not to be shy, and to be [themselves] while people are watching and focusing on [them]” (Cromie, paragraph 12), but participation in beauty pageants can easily cause the opposite effect on the girls.…

She takes a neutral opinion about beauty pageants and sheds light on some positive effects surrounding beauty pageants as well as the negative on young girls. In the article, she writes about the different types of pageants. The first pageant discussed is one that involves contestants performing a talent and participating in an interview in order to win a prize aimed toward their education, such as a scholarship for college. The second type of pageant talked about is the pageant based only on the physical appearance of the contestant. These types of pageants often do not contain an education prize to the winner. She argues that the second type of pageant objectify young girls and make them believe that only outward beauty is important. She then opposes her statement by saying there is no reason that young girls should be ashamed of flaunting their physically beauty. I think this article has potential to be useful in my paper. It gives both a positive and negative view of beauty…

“And the winner is….” This is the moment they have all been waiting for, to find out who will be crowned ‘Grand Supreme’. Some girls among the contestants are filled with nervousness when the moment is nearing. Who will take this prestigious title? “Ryan Lee, from Houston Texas!”. As the one girl runs up to get her crown the twelve remaining girls look into the crowd only to meet the eyes of their unhappy mothers. A weary look of shame appears on their make-up caked face. They all know that once they get off this stage their mothers will not be pleased. So they plaster a plastic smile on their face and hide under their fake tan. This is the classic reaction of most glitz and even some small child pageants.…

My beautiful was for us contestants to showcase our talent. I was able to showcase my talent through a beautiful spoken word titled “Why It Got to Be Me”. I wore a tattered shirt, and ripped jeans to tell a story of how overcoming unfortunate events in life managed me to become a successful individual. In addition, the evening wear finale came. This following portion of the pageant I wore an African print mermaid style dress, and walked out individually to my bio and music. I walked out elegantly, and presented my poise to all of the audience. Once I finalized my walk, a pageant titleholder finished my bio. I waited to the side for the other contestants to end their walk, and arranged for the questionnaire portion of the pageant.…

Most of the European countries participate in the Eurovision Song Contest and have an artist representing their country. The winner of the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest winner was Conchita Wurst from Austria. What was significant about the winner, was that Wurst is a drag queen. Wurst wears dresses, heels and makeup, which is associated with what women wear. However, he also has a beard which is significant for men. He breaks with all the stereotypical gender roles by mixing them together and showing it to everybody. Wurst proves the queer theory by showing that “identities are not fixed but fluid” (Wood 51) and critiques the conventional categories of identity and cultural views of “normal” and “abnormal” (Wood 51). In an interview with Billboard,…
