Saturday night, the nation is huddled around the television the computer or any electronic device they can get their hands on. As the national anthem plays 23 men all clad in black stand proudly while another 23 dressed in yellow stand silently just metres apart, the silence is broken as wild cheers go up as the men in black start the Haka as their opponents stand with expressionless faces. Similar scenes are happening on the channel over but these men are dresses in white the silver fern still adorns their chest, the captains come to together and flip a coin and there's silent anticipated as he taps his bat on the ground and steps up to the crease.

The All Blacks, the Black Caps and the Silver Ferns the three big names in New Zealand sport and everyone knows it, they dominate our screens. "Breaking All Blacks squad named" or " Breaking Black Caps score 245 for 4" headlines like these plaster our news agency's screens and the Tv is no better, Sky Sport 1 - Rugby, Sky Sport 2 - league, Sky Sport 3 - Cricket, Sky Sport 4 if your lucky is maybe golf. With our screens plastered with the "big" sports what happened to the smaller ones, ones people may like watching more than rugby but can't because in New Zealand the range of sport to watch is very limited.

New Zealand has a huge range of sports of which we have national teams and if not a team, people representing New Zealand and to me it seems unfair because they are not considered a "big" sport we can't watch and enjoy them. Sky or the media arnt solely responsible for this as the "big 3" are the most popular sorts but the way that they make them dominate our screens and our headlines is their doing. Do media outlets and broadcaster not have a responsibility to broadcast and report fairly and unbiasedly on all sports. The fix is simple of …show more content…
Every athlete who competes at a national level has to be good they all have to go through rigorous selection processes, so why should European rugby be prioritised over sports that our athletes are competing in? To me this seems unfair and the media need to start noticing and reporting on all the other sports that we compete in, in success or failure because they have earnt their position and don't deserve to be ignored because they don't qualify as a "big"

    For my first international sports section I got something out of the Japan Times. At first glance I saw that soccer looked to be what they covered most because it was the main picture and had the first tab. I looked to see what soccer teams were being covered and I saw that it was all team, from local professional Japanese teams to the English Premiere League. This tells me that soccer is a big time sport in Japan because they seem to care about all leagues of soccer. The next sport that was on the Japanese paper was basketball. With the basketball I was surprised to see that the NBA was making news over in Japan, I expected to see their own league making most of the headlines but it was just the other way around. This shows how the NBA is a worldwide league and people of all cultures seem to be attracted to it. After the basketball section they had a section devoted to baseball. The main article for the baseball section was about the upcoming WBC (World Baseball Classic). It talked about the roster of the Japanese team and went into dept on some of the players on the team. I also saw how like basketball, baseball too had coverage of the American based league. News from the MLB was covered fairly deep in the Japanese paper. When thinking of why the MLB and the NBA was covered but the NFL wasn’t at all, I figured that there are a higher number of Japanese players in the MLB and NBA compared to a very low number in the NFL. Lastly I saw that the newspaper had a section devoted to Sumo. This is something new to me, I have new read anything about Sumo. They had news about the weights and matches of Sumos all across Japan. Overall the Japanese sport section covered around 50% Japanese sports and 50% American sports this is proof of the great impact of American sport.…
