TMA02: “Rubbish has no value “

In this essay i want to discuss and analyse rubbish and it’s value. Rubbish has been described as something with no value, however value is a complex term and does not complete a clear picture of rubbish. To define rubbish clearly I want to discuss the relationship between rising affluence and consumer society and how they have produced more rubbish. Also what rubbish means to different people and who are the winners and losers in the mass generation of rubbish. I will also look at the sustainability of affluent societies, its effect of the environment and why negative externalities should be but are often not considered in the valuation of goods. Using Thompsons theory of rubbish(1979) and Baumans theory of consumption (1988) i hope to provide a detailed analysis of the pros and contra for the argument that “ Rubbish has no value “

To discuss rubbish and its value we need to discuss consumption and how and why consumption has grown in society. In contemporary society people are not longer solely defined by what they do but more so by what do they consume. Consumption has a huge part to play in socialisation in term of what things we consume say about us and how we are trying to portray ourselves also. A question that was often asked when someone met someone new was “ What do you do ? “ , more so now the question is “ What are you into ? “ . ( Hetherington , 2009, p.23 ) Generally people consume to define who they are but also some consumption is out of necessity for generally day to day living. E.g once a car was seen as a luxury but now for some it is a necessity for work. Bauman’s theory of consumption (Bauman, cited in Hetherington,2009, p. 25 ) talks about the seduced and the repressed in contemporary Western consumer society. People in a high affluent consumer society have more disposable income and can consume more to portray a social status of themselves and others. These people are known as the seduced

    Garbology: Our Dirty Love Affair with Trash is a non-fictional work written by Edward Humes, in which he demonstrates the effects of waste which human’s have relentlessly produced over the previous decades. In chapter 6, Nerds vs. Nurdles, Humes exhibits the damage that half a century of careless consumption has had on the environment and ecosystems. Our society today has been blind to its surroundings as a product of consumer apathy and does not realize the detrimental effects of our wasting until it is too large a task to resolve. Society neglects to think beyond the extent of the present and the potential consequences and harms materials could bring once we decided that it is no longer beneficial and toss them out. Scientists cannot even begin to predict the approximate amount of plastic nurdles that floats within the ocean. Without any awareness of the amount of trash, it makes the mission of cleaning the ocean impossible. An individual’s never satisfied hunger for the newest technology continually swells the ocean with increasing plastic. Synthetic material is viewed as a necessity for making everyday life easier. Ironically, plastic gradually finds a path back to harm society that appreciates it so greatly. Through bio-magnification, plastic finds a way back to humans through the consumption of seafood; additionally humans ingest chemicals from synthetics which aquatic animals previously consumed. As plastic remains in the oceans it will continually find a path up the food chain, consequently humans will inescapably ingest their own trash through fish and crustaceans which occupy large portions of daily diets. Consumers also avoid the most detrimental aspect of ocean dumping, the result it has on phytoplankton, microscopic organisms that account for virtually 50% of oxygen.     Lars Eighner is an experienced dumpster diver or as he prefers to call it “scavenging.” He writes “On Dumpster Diving” an essay about the three years he spent on the streets accompanied by his lone companion, dog Lizabeth. Born in Texas in 1948, Eighner began dumpster diving one year before he ended up homeless after being unable to pay for his rent. Diving through dumpsters to obtain life’s main necessities, Eighner becomes a veteran at realizing what foods are safe and what items can be useful if kept. The Blair Reader, 7th ed. 2011) that although waste and garbage have many negative effects on the environment, it is still good for business. Of the many monuments of civilization, the Fresh Kills Landfill is one of them; it is the largest landfill. The United States is the world’s biggest producer of garbage. It is now harder to avoid producing waste and garbage. There are questions about garbage and where it goes that remain unanswered such as: will we run out of places to put garbage? An abundance of garbage means an abundance of decay and filth, and yet waste is a necessary part of the consumer society. Foe every ton of household waste, there are seventy tons of industrial waste. Not only does garbage have a negative effect on the environment, but the way we deal with garbage also has a negative effect on the environment. Since the national set of standards was implemented ten years ago, there are garbage graveyards now that are struggling to meet new standards. There are also landfill gases in addition to landfill liquid waste. Waste incinerators were responsible for producing sixty-nine percent of the worldwide dioxin emissions. Thirty percent of municipal waste is packaging; forty percent is from plastics, though we know that plastics stay intact for centuries. The output of throwaways is still enormous after the introduction of recycling. Most recyclables still end up as garbage. Our consumption of raw materials and our production of waste speed up the destruction of the earth’s natural systems. Global warming is occurring faster than predicted because of the increase in burning fossil fuels. Extreme weather has already occurred as an effect of emissions.     The film Wasteland follows famous artist Vik Muniz as he visits Jardim Gramacho, a garbage dumpsite in his native country Brazil. There he starts a fundraising project of photographing some of the chosen “pickers” and creating enlargements of the photos made of recyclable materials, he then sells the creations and gives the proceeds to the group. Watching as the project materializes was very inspiring. Most of workers or “catadores” lived a hard life but in their own personal tragedies they never let it stop them from working hard to get where they want to be in life. For even though they admitted picking out recyclable materials, was disgusting they were still so proud of their work and I believe they had a very good reason to be. Their job no matter how unsanitary is very dignified. One of the oldest pickers even said that it was okay to get his hands dirty since when he receives his salary, he knows he got it from dignity. This is a very inspirational statement given the present state of the world wherein human trafficking, prostitution, kidnapping, drug dealing and the like are being used to earn profit. Aside from the high personal integrity brought about by their job they are also immensely helping the environment. I strongly believe there are riches in garbage. I not only give kudos to the pickers but also to Vik Muniz for in his success as an artist he did not fail to look back from where he came from. He did a lot to help the people in Jardim Gramacho rise up from their financial situations. One of the things he said in the film which really got to me was “ I’d rather be the one to have nothing and want everything than to have everything and want nothing.” This depicts how the real sense of fulfillment of a person has nothing to do with gaining worldly…
