Engelsk essay: ”Roy Spivey” - Miranda July

We all know how pointless and empty life can be in periods of your life. We get up everyday, go to work, cook and eat with our families, and then we go to bed again - The next day is the same as the day before. These are meaningless days without any contents.
It sometimes feels like being on autopilot – we are just doing it, because we are supposed to do it. One day taking another empty day, and without realising it. Years have gone.

Sometimes it can be wise to stop for a moment and ask yourself, what you are doing right now and does it really make you happy?
Life is about being able to live the day you are given, and live in present time and not in the past.

Important moments in your life can easily slip away if you don’t catch them. That is what happens to the main character in the short story, ”Roy Spivey”, by Miranda July.

A first person narrator tells the story, and the story is told from her point of view. This makes it easier for us to identify with her, and learn about her personality. The main character’s name isn’t told but we know it is a woman. The story is written in past tense and the whole scenario on the airplane is actually a flashback, a moment where she is thinking back of an episode from her life. The flashback is about a plane trip, which the main character had been on a long time ago. The description of the meeting with Roy Spivey is very detailed, but after that the flashback vines fast forwards until suddenly she is grown up, married, her father is dead and she has a daughter who is teenager. This way of skipping all these chapters of her life clarifies that these chapters haven’t been important for her.

The story is not told specifically by one character. Not only is the story in third person, it is also limited which means “the author reveals only one character’s emotions and thoughts to the reader” (Harvest Books 5). The mother in this story does not have a name and is “referred to as the children’s mother. This reveals that the grandmother thinks of her only as her son’s wife and her grandchildren’s mother” (Harvest Books 6). This helps embellish the point of view in the story. Even though the point of view is centered around the grandmother’s thoughts, O’Connor never fully gets into the thoughts of the grandmother. This distance helps readers develop conclusions about the story and its characters. The only other character that is not given a name is Grandmother and that is to keep from giving Grandmother an identity and instead make her a “type of person” (Harvest Books 5). O’Connor did this so the readers would judge her by her actions not a…

Pivotal moments can sometimes be created to help people learn from a mistake, or to keep a great memory going. Some pivotal moments can be a great burden, if you allow it. Other pivotal moments can make a person stronger, healthier, or become a motivation to be a better person. In most traditional works of literature, the existence of narration is both a crucial and mandatory element in order to fulfill the writer's purpose. Such works of literature include short stories and novels. The importance of the narrator goes beyond the act of simply telling a story that happens in a specific place at one particular point in time. Through the course of the years, famous writers have used the narrator as a tool to create suspense and force the audience to read the story from a specific point of view. Within this group of writers, William Faulkner and Charlotte Perkins Gilman have used the narrator to allow the reader to interpret the story from a desired point of view. Faulkner achieves this by using first person narrator…

Martin Luther King Jr. once said “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter”. He understood that although a person is breathing, he is not truly alive unless he is living for a purpose. A good life is one that is lived with the intention of constantly bettering oneself and the world in which they live. Unfortunately, this life can only be attained by making sacrifices. Time and independence are both expenses that must be paid in order to live a meaningful, and therefore good, life.…

The simple answer is simply this: the meaning of life is whatever we choose it to be. One person may choose to provide food and shelter for oneself, for a family or for total strangers. Another person may choose to provide inspiration and guidance to others, or to accumulate wealth, and yet another person may choose, on a moment to moment basis, that which brings peace and happiness to oneself. This decision in what makes your life meaningful is something each one of us makes for ourselves and it is always open to change. It becomes the basis for many other decisions that we make on a day to day basis. If we decide the…
