Rough.
It starts out rough at first, a struggle, fighting the thing that is ultimately supposed to help you, you’re blinded by a clear force of nature, and then, all of a sudden, everything becomes simple. You’re gliding on top of what once held you down; you’ve conquered your oppressor. You’re riding the “wave” of life, controlling everywhere you go, you’re on top of the world! But the only problem with being at the top of the world is that there is only one way left to go. Down. You can never tell what the “wave” might throw you next, maybe it will be something easy, or fun, some minor bump you can turn into the jump you’ve been waiting for so you can finally do that perfect 360, or maybe it’s a rogue set of waves from hell that end with you face down in the water, sore and in need of some serious chiropractic assistance. And we all get those rogue waves when we’re at our finest moment, but when that wave comes and knocks you over, the only thing you can do is get back up on it, time, and time again, and let the wave know that you will never let anything stop you from trying to do what you need to do. The wave was murky coming towards like a rigid and supreme barrier. It began to coil over, he looked up the wave loomed over him. His father’s words came back to him giving him an urge of determination “a true mariner never deserts a sinking ship.” It heaved itself onto his boat. The boat shredded apart, jagged pieces of timber where floating and he was left sinking. His boat had plunged into the depths of the enigmatic ocean. The salted sea pricked at his delicate eyes and his spectral face white washed. He was crawling for breath kicking his feet neurotically. He managed to clench onto a residue of his boat his naked fingers scratching the plank and splinters dashing up his finger nails. For him time felt suspended. His clothes saturated with water clinging on and sticking onto his skin. He was wrinkling like a prune. He had a vacant expression, solitude was conquering him. He had to overcome this despair as the turbulence of the storm…

I get halfway to the other end of the pool. I start to feel my lower half start to droop in the water. As Louie, Phil, and Mac are stuck in the vast sea, slowly each one's mind is fading away. Louie and Phil are constantly trying to look forward to the future to stay alive, Mac’s life is fading away. Hillenbrand describes each man's outcome, “ Though all three men faced the same hardships, their differing perceptions of it appeared to be shaping their fates. Louie and Phil's optimism, and Mac’s hopelessness, were becoming self-fulfilling” (155). Hillenbrand demonstrates that keeping a positive image on better things more than reality, can slowly but surely keep one going. If Louie stopped believing that he would one day he would get off the raft he would of lost hope long before. The hope he creates in his mind ignites his motivation to never lose faith. With a future to look forward to Louie is able to escape an undesirable fate. Throughout the story Louie's resilience never seems to fade, infact it continues to grow throughout the story. One of Louie's most remarkable moments is when re refuses to back down to the Bird. The bird orders him to hold an iron beam over his head. Once I felt as though I could do it, I let my heart rate settle a little bit and then walked towards the daunting ledge. I looked over the ledge at the water below and had to take one step back and regroup. I was trying to drown out the members of my family who were saying things like “you can do it!”,“You’re almost there” and, “I believe in you”, but after hearing those things I realized it was much needed, it gave me a boost of confidence. I walked back to the ledge, turned my back to the open water, and faced the gigantic rock I would be attempting to climb down. I gripped my hands tightly on the cold rock and moved one foot down the side until I found a small ledge I could rest my foot on. The only thing that was going through my mind was the possibility of the rope holding my weight, preventing me from falling, could break and I would fall and hit the hard rocks below me. Hot tears were streaming down my bright red face, I was looking up at my family through my vision blurred with tears of…

There are times in life when we feel the whole world is against us. Every so often we come face to face with an obstacle that seems even greater than the last. We fall into a deep physiological pithole where we fear our efforts to climb to the top will not be sufficient enough to actually reach it. First, we try to rationalize the situation. We tell ourselves that the situation is not as bad as it seems and that everything will be fine. But sometimes, when the walls start to close in on us, we break from our false hopes and become desperate to escape. We claw, stomp, and chew at the sides of the pit, yet the pit is unaware of such harassment. The pit isolates us from everyone else, the pit becomes the center of our attention, the pit becomes our new lifestyle. Nevertheless, despite the impossible odds, we can…

I kept myself on pace, past the sidewalk, and down the small hill. My feet shuffled faster, my breathing became heavier. I lowered my arms, lengthened my strides and prayed to God that he would give me strength. My lungs began to scream obscenities, my heart threatened to leave my chest, and I was sure my legs were planning my murder. I started to embrace the pain exploding through my body. I began work among the strains of physical feeling and pushing myself against my mental limitations. Each leaden step burnt my tired muscles and bore into my brain. An undesirable battle presented itself to me. Demands made themselves prevalent in my mind.…

I run as fast as a storm to get to the blockades for cover. Bullets whizz, whistle and whoosh past. My heart pounds against my ribcage, bursting to jump out. Men tumble to the floor, one by one dropping to their knees, like they are sitting ducks. I stumble and fall into the water, the only thing calm. Slowly sinking, I scream for help. But no sound comes out. The only thing that did was bubbles of air. I was battling Mother Nature herself...this was the end... I close my eyes, slowly running out of oxygen. But my men cut the bag off my back and I’m free...Totally free...…

    Tough Times

A tough time is something that all of us has or will experience. It doesn't feel good during tough times. It seems like everything is not the way you want it during the tough times. Nobody likes to have to go through a tough time. A tough time can be somebody dying, a bad test, a fight, being sick, or being grounded. I have experienced some difficult times, but I got over them after a while. One of my experiences was my great aunt dying of cancer. She was a special person to me. I used to go to her house all the time and I loved her cooking. We almost never had any arguments and she really cared for me, even when I was being bad. When she died I didn't believe God. Why would this God take someone like that away from me? I hated it. For a while I didn't want to talk about God, I didn't like him. I thought it was his entire fault my great aunt died. As I grew older I understood why she had to die. Instead of suffering through all the pain, she could be in a place of no pain. I used to only think of the bad parts of death, but I later realized there is also a happy side. I think most people think there is no good in death and it is a time to be sad and cry. Life is about how you lived, not how you died. If she was still alive she wouldn't want to see me be sad and mad all the time. From this tough experience I learned that once I can get over an obstacle I will be a much stronger person. You should always live life to the fullest because you never know what will happen tomorrow. Some people get into stupid arguments with a person, but when the person is not around anymore, they really regret doing that kind of thing. Although it may seem like the person you are having a fight with doesn't care for you, the person actually does. I rarely…

Like swimming through a river of syrup you struggle to break free from your momentary transportation to an alternate plane of reality. Your existence during this time is different; consequences, causality – they don’t matter. Nothing does. Your trapped in a cob web so dense, so confined that you are wedged into a crevice of bitterness – to move left or right is impossible. To deviate from the path of anger is unattainable. The only way to escape is to trudge through to the end of the fissure, at the very bottom of deepest catacombs or your mind, exploring the emotions that make you doubt your humanity.…
