At the start, let me state what an excellent job you did on this assignment, such as, pointing out the Muss' antecedent pronoun usage (annoying to say the least) demonstrated how detailed your critique was completed. However, in your rewrite, “What good are elected officials that don’t perform on behalf of the citizens who elected them?” Rossenwasser and Stephen describe contractions as “too informal at times” and for a critical writing research project, personally, I avoid them unless in a quote. Erik, you are a talented writer and this is the second time that I am correcting something, however, please note that you are the first person that I read when looking for a subject mainly, regarding your outstanding details. In addition, Rossenwasser et.al describe one overall problem that I have seen repeated on these boards.

I have found that taking out the words: is, are, may, could/should, but, and a few others that I reach for first, make me less of an absolutist on my positions. Therefore, my voice becomes more objective to the reader. In your review, I counted five “to be” (is, are) statements that when I catch them in my writing, it cues that I have better phraseology available to my sentence.
