In the play Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead by Tom Stoppard there are many different themes that can be gleaned from the playoff of Hamlet. One of the main themes is the concept of fate. Fate, as defined by Random House Dictionary, is: something that unavoidably befalls a person (Fate). Rosencrantz and Guildenstern constantly deal with fate. It seems that they do not quite understand what this is. When discussing who dies with the Players Guildenstern asks, “Who decides?” to which the Player replies promptly, “Decides? It is written” (80). The player appears surprised that Guildenstern does not already comprehend that death, and the life before it is not something that is decided by each individual. Even so, there are several allusions to fate throughout the play, and it 's apparent hold on the characters. After all, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are dead. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern have a general understanding of fate, what it is, and the fact that though they may not have believed in it before it appears to be acting upon them now. In the beginning of the play the two play a coin game in which one of them flips a coin. If it lands on heads, Rosencrantz gets it, if tails then it goes to Guildenstern. The coin came up heads every time, for more than sixty flips and Guildenstern examines the law of averages. He says, “. . .if six monkeys were thrown up in the air for long enough they would land on their tails about as often as they would land on their---” to which Rosencrantz ironically responds, “Heads” (13). Guildenstern then postulates as to the reason for this failure of the law of averages. He gives four different explanations saying, “One: I 'm willing it. . .Two: time has stopped dead, and the single experience of one coin being spun once has been repeated ninety times. . .Three: divine intervention. . .Four: a spectacular vindication of the principle [probability]” (16).     They possess an odd relationship with the Player, leader of the Tragedians. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern do not like the Player, nor does he like them. However, they always seem to find themselves in the same place at the same time. After their first meeting when Rosencrantz and Guildenstern abandon the actors during their performance, they are reunited in the court of the King and Queen. The Player expresses the “humiliation of” being left to act for no audience, but Rosencrantz and Guildenstern feel no sympathy for him (p. 30). During their time together in the court, the three argue about whether it is possible to “act death” or not (p. 42).     Tom Stoppard: A Critic of The Modern Age Tom Stoppard is one of the twentieth century 's most interesting and creative playwrights. He uses his art form to criticize society 's inability to handle the thought that we are governed by chaos. The modern world has created fate as an excuse for not doing anything to shape or change our outcome. Stoppard uses his plays as a mirror held up to society, showing his audience the ridiculousness of leaving everything up to fate. Tom Stoppard is a contemporary playwright living in Great Britain. Stoppard created modern characters to reflect modern attitudes, and most specifically, modern flaws. In each case he shows that the characters representing modern men will readily believe that their future cannot be changed and that they are not responsible for their own acts. He uses different characters in vastly different circumstances to make and criticize this same point. In Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, Stoppard cleverly removes the characters of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern from the play of Hamlet, extends Shakespeare 's caricatures of them and makes them modern. The play is now about how Rosencrantz and Guildenstern present the viewer with an image of modern attitudes. They never perceive any kind of order in the universe. To them everything is completely random. On the other hand, the Player represents the epitomy of a person in denial of chaos. To him everything is set in stone, even death. Throughout the course of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, Stoppard mixes three different sets of characters that are crucial to Shakespeare 's Hamlet. These groups are Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, the troupe of players called the Tragedians and the main cast of Hamlet.
