Rose In The Recruiting Officer
Discuss how you would perform the role of Rose in the Recruiting Officer, in two or three sections of the play, in order to create comedy for your audience.

The two sections of the Recruiting Officer where I would perform the role of Rose in order to create comedy for the audience would be Rose’s first encounter with Plume in Act 3 scene 1 and later in act 4 scene 1.
Rose’s physical appearance and facial features would assist the creation of comedy for the audience in her first appearance in the play with her brother. She would be short and slim and curvy built, this would immediately make her look quite young- about 20 years of age. I would like Rose to wear a bit more make up: e.g more blusher to appear as if she has been flustered (by having sex with Plume) than previous scenes that have included her; this will appear to the audience that she has been treated well by Plume. I would say the first line to Bullock in an annoyed tone and emphasise and exaggerate the word ‘booby’ to make to the audience laugh. I would have both arms on my hips and half face the audience and half face Bullock. My facial expression would show how annoyed I am. As I say ‘Look’ee, I’m a great woman and will provide for my relations…’ I would walk across the stage and look towards the ceiling as I say the line to show how great I have become because of my relationship to Plume, I would talk in a dreamlike state at a slow pace. The audience would find this funny as they know the true nature of Plumes intentions- which is only to get Bullock listed through Rose. By doing this action and speaking in the way I do, I will show the naivety of Rose’s character. When I say ‘I told the captain how finely he played upon the tabor and pipe…’ I would walk back towards Bullock and raise the pitch of my voice to show that I am showing off. After Silvia comes in and begins to talk to Rose, I would change to my flirtatious tone of voice and slow the pace down as I talk in order to seem more seductive. I would prolong the words ‘No, No’ and exaggerate the word ‘handsome’ by lowering the tone of my voice at that point. I would make eye contact with Jack Wilful fluttering my eyebrows at the same time. The line ‘I know that, but he promised to marry me afterwards’ should be said gleefully and I would sway from side to side as if I were little girl, this would also emphasise my delusion that Plume actually cared for me. As Plume enters in I would show my excitement by beaming a smile and raising my eyebrows

    I found the scene in which Lily and her husband are sat on the sofa, centre right stage, and are trying to be affectionate but always ending up in awkward positions particularly effective.     The action from scene to scene to scene was very well rehearsed. In the chapter on action from Costantin Stanislavski An Actor Prepares, it is states that ‘all action within the theatre must have an inner justification, be coherent, logical, and real’ (Stanislavski 46). I truly believed that child-like wonder was at work regarding interaction in performances by Carolyn Coppedge, Nazli Sarpkaya, Stephanie King, and company. I believe these acting mechanisms were effective in communication underlined messages: having freedom of choice in one’s life, wanting love, desire, and so forth. They briefly reminded me of free form exercises done in class where we reacted to invisible mediums that were of meaning. As for costumes, the dresses didn’t exactly provide the impression of escaped brides; I felt that King as Thyona made the most of her character and was free of any boundaries they may have presented; I was able to see her as more than a runaway bride. The art of if is something I postulate as having been necessary to so robustly support a character of Thyona’s standing. Stanislavski writes that when posed with a situation within given circumstance, one must answer to its call whole-heartedly; an actor is overall persuaded to fulfill the demands of an if (Stanislavski 46-48). King definitely answered this call, and in doing so, was one of two actors that caught the most attention. The other was Richard McDonald as Constantine; McDonald’s vibrant energy paralleled King’s in deliverance of role. To once again refer to the super objective, the inner grasp and through line of action are essential to the creative process involved in reaching said objective (Stanislavski 279). McDonald’s undertone in Constantine’s monologue regarding the nature and poor predisposition of man supplemented Thyona’s attitude and conceptions regarding the same nature.
