Romeo And Juliet Light And Darkness Essay
Light and darkness are one of those common motifs found in literature. It came be used to draw a theme or show contrast between characters. An example of this motif is Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Throughout Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare creates a dramatic contrast and connection between light and darkness by using scenes that can be happy and bright, but have a dark theme, and how the characters provide that contrast as well. Shakespeare conducts multiple scenes in the play that have that contrast of light and dark within the scenery and theme. First of all, when Romeo visits Juliet on the balcony, night has risen, but there it contrast with the sweet words of Romeo: “ O, speak again bright angel, for thou art As glorious to this night being o’er my head. As is a winged messenger of heaven. Unto the white-upturned wondering eyes,”(2.2.29-32). The scenery here is dark and mysterious which contrasts with the theme of how Romeo expresses his undying love for Juliet that he claims that her face will bring day. Romeo, during the balcony scene, claims Juliet as the sun and the stars by saying “ arise fair sun, and kill the envious moon, Who is already sick and pale with grief..,” ( 2.2.5-6). Romeo describes Juliet as the sun that will kill has dark and depressing days of being lonely. He compares himself as the moon hiding and grieving from Rosaline breaking his heart, but Juliet is the opposite of him. She brings happiness to world and to Romeo. Juliet also refers Romeo as the moon, however in a different perspective: “Come gentle night, Come Romeo. Come thou day in night. For thou wilt lie upon the wings of night.” (3.2.17-18). Juliet describes Romeo as her night in a similar way of how Romeo says Juliet is his day. Shakespeare creates this contrast of day and night to complement Romeo and Juliet’s love for

    In Act 3 Scene 5 of the play “Romeo and Juliet” by William Shakespeare, the scene depicted by the author matches the one described in the song “Daylight” by Maroon 5 almost identically. It would appear that the singer of “Daylight” finds himself in a position similar to that of Romeo in that they are each spending their last night’s with their true loves for a long while. The first example of this is that both are required to leave their loves when the sun rises. When Romeo and Juliet wake up and see the sun rising, Romeo says, “jocund day stands tiptoe on the misty mountain tops” (Romeo and Juliet 3.5.9). The sun coming up is a sign to Romeo that he will have to leave Juliet. This is similar to the line in “Daylight” when the artist says, “When the sun comes up, I will have to leave” (Maroon 5 Daylight). Another place where we find similarities between “Daylight” and “Romeo and Juliet” is when both artists use creative metaphors to say the stars are no longer visible because the night is over. In “Romeo and Juliet” this thought is conveyed when Romeo says, “Night’s candles are burned out” (3.5.9). This quotation’s counterpart from “Daylight” bluntly says, “The stars are burning out”(Maroon 5 Daylight). Both quotations suggest that stars have candle-like qualities and can be snuffed out.
