The character I have chosen is Friar Laurence he influences Romeo and Juliet by telling them the upcoming events in the near future. He has also married Romeo and Juliet despite Laurence being shocked by Romeo’s mishap with rosaline which did not give Romeo any affection, it also was an attempt to try to stop the civil Feud between the capulets and the Montagues. Friar also helps them both when Romeo is banished for killing Tybalt and as he runs to mantua Laurence helps Romeo and Juliet by making a potion to help fake Juliet's death but, as friar tries to send a letter to Romeo it doesn't go through because the villagers suspect it comes from a house that is infected. Friar is also too late to come to Romeo's suicide because Romeo thought he…

Since I have yet to reach a part where everyone’s birth date is given, part of the comprehension will be in finding whatever characteristics best match the characters. The interesting part about my vision here, is that each zodiac sign has not only a certain set of traits, but usually their compatibility is also given. With a growing romantic interest, and even animus between certain characters, the zodiac sign should give some insight on the role of the character as well as how they…

Juliet’s personality and character is one of the most obvious and significant element that has been recontextualised. In Shakespeare’s play, Juliet is described to be more than just a pretty face; she’s smart, witty, determined and mature. She knows what she wants, and she gets it as it is Juliet who proposes to Romeo not the other way around. In the text, she is written to be thirteen years of age and begins the play as a naïve child who has thought little about love and marriage, but she grows up quickly upon falling in love with Romeo. Being a girl from a high social class family, she has none of the freedom Romeo has to roam around the city or climb over walls at midnight. However she shows amazing courage in trusting her life and future to Romeo, refusing to believe the worst reports about him and even willing to shut important people out of her life (nurse) the moment they turn against Romeo. "And when I shall die, take him and cut him up in little stars, and he will make the face of heaven so fine that the entire world will fall in love with night and pay no worship to the garish sun." Juliet’s role in society is very minor and simple. She is the pretty, ‘prized’ daughter of the Capulets and is expected to be obedient of men in their families. In the novel, she receives little guidance and help from her family and is expected to marry Paris as her father decided. This gives a clear example of women’s role and its unimportance.…

Romeo: The son of Montague, Romeo is first introduced to us as a sad, melancholic, apathetic youth. His reason for sadness is universal; Rosaline his love will not return his affections. Not initially daring, it is his friends Mercutio and Benvolio who suggest he gatecrash or arrive uninvited at the Capulet party to see Rosaline. There he meets Juliet falling instantly in love. From this point on, Romeo no longer is melancholic, but dynamic and courageous, risking his life at the Capulet's house to be near Juliet and later breaking a banishment order which threatens death for him, to see his Juliet again. Well regarded even by Capulet, his enemy, Romeo is a thoughtful man, unwilling to provoke fighting unlike the hot-blooded, adversarial Tybalt, whom he kills. Romeo also kills Paris but in both encounters sought to avoid fighting, winning only to defend his life. At the end of the play, he commits suicide, rather than live without Juliet, the ultimate display of loyalty for his love Juliet since his life obviously no longer had meaning without her...…

Firstly, Romeo and Juliet should stay on the Preliminary English reading list because of its wide range of language techniques. Through the effective use of metaphor, oxymoron and hyperbole, Shakespeare is able to expose to us to the use of literary techniques to educate us through the practice of reading Shakespearean language. The use of oxymoron is shown when Romeo boasts out “O heavy lightness! serious vanity! Mis - shapen chaos of well - seeming forms. Feather of lead, bright smoke, cold fire, sick health!” This is from Act 1, Scene 1 and lines 175-178. As you can see Romeo is clearly contradicting his own words from fire which is hot not ‘cold’ and contradicts health to being ‘sick’, as well as smoke from being ‘bright’. An example of the use of hyperbole is used when Romeo over exaggerates his obsession of Juliet, he quotes.. “See, how she leans her cheek upon her hand! O, that I were a glove upon that hand, That I might touch that cheek!” This is from Act 2, Scene 1 and lines 23-25. Romeo is explaining that if he was Juliet’s glove he could touch her cheek. This is obviously stating exaggeration to the point where he would like to be the glove on her hand. The expression of metaphor through Juliet’s exact words of “My bounty is as boundless as the sea, My love as deep, the more I give thee”. This is from Act 2, Scene 1 and lines 33-34. Juliet is expressing how deep her love is, she’s giving the impression that the more love she gives the deeper her love grows for her dearest Romeo. These are only a few of many examples of literary techniques that Shakespeare educates us through Shakespearean language.…

In the churchyard that night, Paris enters with a torch-bearing servant. He orders the page to withdraw, then begins scattering flowers on Juliet’s grave. He hears a whistle—the servant’s warning that someone is approaching. He withdraws into the darkness. Romeo, carrying a crowbar, enters with Balthasar. He tells Balthasar that he has come to open the Capulet tomb in order to take back a valuable ring he had given to Juliet. Then he orders Balthasar to leave, and, in the morning, to deliver to Montague the letter Romeo had given him. Balthasar withdraws, but, mistrusting his master’s intentions, lingers to watch.…

The characteristics of Romeo and Juliet fit those required of a tragic protagonist. Romeo and Juliet come from “Two households, both alike in dignity” (1.1.1), as do all protagonists in tragedies. Once Romeo and Juliet become wed, Romeo shows his tragic flaw while leaving “Tybalt slain” (3.1.128) in the streets of Verona. This action brings out Romeo’s character flaw, impulsiveness. He kills Tybalt, not thinking of the consequences to come and now he must deal with them. After Romeo’s tragic flaw becomes obvious, he comes to his downfall when having to deal with his “banishment” (3.3.11). Romeo clearly does not wish to accept this fate as he had just married Juliet. Banishment is the highest form of Greek punishment so it is suitable for the protagonist of a tragedy. The ending of Romeo’s downfall is death, which was by his own hand. This is another example of his impulsiveness, since Juliet is not deceased, but alive and following the Friar’s plan. He acts upon this situation before he can see the outcome of the plan, instead of waiting and going to the funeral where he would have been once again united with his lover. Romeo was too urgent to make a quick and costly decision that would end both his and his lovers life. That brings the spotlight to Juliet’s tragic flaws, which include putting too much trust in others and her loyalty to Romeo. She willingly takes a “vial” (4.1.93) of potion to make her appear dead when really she is not, so that she can see Romeo again. She put too much trust into Friar Lawrence’s plan, which failed, and led to the eventual deaths of both Romeo and Juliet. The protagonists…
