roman literature
Ancient Romans claimed descent from Greeks, in fact the Great Roman poet Virgil wrote an epic poem entitled Aeneid where he tells that Romans come from Aeneas line who escaped from the Trojan fire to save his royal descent. He landed at Italy where married a princess named Lavinia.
That means you have to consider Roman literature as an evolution of Greek literature: Romans learn from Greek but progress.
Greek and Roman literature is wide and it includes: tragedies, comedies, poems, epics etc. You can’t compare these forms of literature all together but one by one.
So I want to compare for you the Greek Tragedy and The Roman Tragedy
The best tragedian in Greece were Aeschylus; Sophocles and Euripides. Their tragedies were mythological stories. The Roman tragedies instead showed Roman historical characters. Plays, in Rome, were free and people of all ranks and classes were admitted to the theater including women and slaves, the same thing appended in Athens, the only exception was women were excluded from the theater.
What remains today of the all tragic Latin works is only a few fragments of Livius Andronicus, Nevio, Ennio, Pacuvio and Accio.
The Roman tragedy inherited from Greek tragedy masks and costumes and a musical-rhythmic structure. That means the actors’ performance was varied. Some parts were simply recited, other parts were accompanied by flute and other parts were sung by the actors or by the choir.
The Greek tragedy talked about conflicts involving religious, moral and political issues. Roman tragedies talked about tyrannical characters and showed bloody scenes.
The only myth that Romans loved was the Trojan War and that for two reasons: because they were descendants of the Trojans and because the Trojan War offered them the opportunity to enhance the virtus (courage), which is best expressed in war, and the pietas (religious respect) towards the homeland and family. Both (virtus and pietas) are the basics of the Roman morals.

In ancient Greece plays became important. There were two kinds of plays written and performed, comedy and tragedy. A comedy back then usually made fun of a certain topic. A tragedy in ancient Greece usually dealt with a social or moral issue, or human suffering. In a tragedy play a girl named Antigone goes against the king’s orders and buries her brother, who was killed while leading a rebellion (Doc 6) shows an example of a tragedy play. In this play many Greeks values were expressed which is the same purpose of the majority of western civilizations plays today which was to express certain…

Cincinnatus won the war in 13 days. Many people were happy and they asked Cincinnatus to be a dictator for life. Cincinnatus turned down the offer because he knew that having a republic was better that having a dictator. He knew that a dictator could abused their power. Cincinnatus left Rome and continued his life on his farm. One reason Cincinnatus should be recognized as a hero was that he won a war in 13 days. If Cincinnatus did not step in, Rome would be destroyed and many people would have died. Most heroes are pictured as people who win battles and save lives. The second reason that Cincinnatus should be a hero was that he was selfless. Cincinnatus turned down the offer to be a dictator for life because he wanted to help his city instead of himself. He knew that having a republic was better than having a dictator. If Cincinnatus became a dictator, he would have been greedy enough for power. Instead, he turned down the offer and continued his life on his farm. This shows that Cincinnatus was not greedy for power. He puts people in front of himself. He gave up the offer for his city. This shows that Cincinnatus is selfless. Of all the things he did, he should be recognized as a…

The author believes that the tolerance the Roman Empire had towards conquered / allied people was one of the biggest reasons why the Roman Empire had grew and prospered so far and long. The Roman Empire like the Achaemenid Empire was extremely tolerant to different religions, they were polytheistic which made tolerance to multiple gods easy to do and it made the people of the newest annexed states less willing to revolt. The Roman Empire had a great respect for the Greek city states, but they had learned that bigotry and ethnic division led to war which is why they behaved relatively similar to all races and allowed mixing of ethnicity. And finally another reason the Roman Empire was so successful is because it had been tolerant to peoples of different areas;often taking in their culture and even granting them Roman citizenship.…

The epic story told in Trojan War is considered by many to be a starting foundation of Greek mythology and to other modern stories we still tell today. It is a story of envy, disloyalty, cleverness, and persistence that few stories can challenge. Greek myths such as The War on Troy tell of epic tales of gods and goddesses working together and even feuding among each other in order to create a more desirable world for themselves. They are the stories of people dealing with and overcoming personal and cultural issues as represented by the gods in a society where history and storytelling go hand in hand. These so called myths…

In ancient Greek literature, there are two types of drama’s. There was the comedic drama, and the tragic drama. The difference between these two dramas would be decided by the fate of the hero at the sisation of the play. Tragedy being the most popular, was the biggest part of Greek society. This is proven by all of the plays, stories, and works the Greeks created concerning this topic. Tragic plays were so heavily conducted that all of them began to share common traits. These similarities are present in two of the most popular Greek tragedies, Oedipus the King and Medea. Both Oedipus the King and Medea have the protagonist’s exhibit excessive stubbornness and steadfastness in their stories which ultimately leads to their downfall.…
