Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry
2. The land is very important to many people. To Big Ma, the land represents family, freedom, and her husband’s hard work and never ending love. Big Ma’s the type of person that will do anything to keep her family’s land. Cassie is the type of person who supports and values the land because it means so much to Big Ma and the rest of the family. Cassie still does not truly understand the value of their land. Uncle Hammer believes the land is a symbol. The land is a symbol of their families’ ownership and independence against the white landowners. To Harlan Granger, the land stands for profit. Mr. Granger is a greedy, racist man, who is jealous that the Logans’ own the land. This land once belonged to his family. This causes Mr. Granger to try and take the land from them unfairly.
3. Storms are represented as chaos and dangers throughout the novel. “The tat-tat of the rain against the tin roof, changed to a deafening roar that sound as if thousands of giant rocks were hurled against the earth.” (45) The author uses the expression of thousands of rocks being hurled to earth, in “the tat-tat rain . . . turned into a deafening roar.” The strong amount and force of rain is basically telling everyone to be safe, and take cover. Theys ridin’ tonight.” (60) “A clap of deafening thunder drowned Mr. Avery’s words, then the rain quickened and the conversation was lost.” (62) Mr. Avery starts talking about the ridin’ tonight, Mama gets scared and suspicious, shortly after the storm drains out the conversation. The strong storm leaves important information to be unheard; this leaves the person suspicious and frightened.

Showing courage isn’t always the easiest thing to do, it requires sacrifices to do the right thing. Throughout the book, Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry Mildred D Taylor uses Stacey as an example of a boy who shows courage, despite everything that is going on during this period of time. For example, Stacey took the cheat notes from his best friend, T.J. and got blamed for it. Stacey had also showed courage when he helped T.J. get back home after the Simms brothers had beat him up. One last example would be when he told Cassie to go and get Papa while he was trying to protect T.J. from the night men. Stacey is a very heroic, bold, fearless, and courageous. I hope that this influences other young readers to be more like him also.…

I feel that what Claire Farrer means by living in the 'mythic present' is that although most Indian culture is perceived long to have been different, it is in fact very live and active today. I will give specific examples from her book, Thunder Rides a Black Horse, to support my arguments of what the 'mythic present' actually means and list many examples of events that could be considered to be in the 'mythic present.'…

In the poem ‘Courage’ by Anne Sexton, she elucidates her depiction of life. “It’s in the small things we see it”(1). In the first place it’s a story of her analyzation of living, as a timeless piece with the ability of her ideas to occur at any given moment. “When death opens the back door”(45). Therefore, the readers are the audience since it’s directed at no particular person nor denies any claims of otherwise.…

Meg pulled her fluffy black blanket close to her, so she can actually feel some warmth during the dismal storms of winds and at high speeds of rain and air. Ordinarily, the storms that weren’t usually this harsh, typically she would doze off right though the night. However in this storm, her mind continued to ruminate about her stress at school. The wind was loud as those sport announcers, she watches on tv sometimes, they shouted when somebody on the Red Sox hit a homerun. The rushing droplets of water smashing against the roof, sounded like as if somebody had bags of pebbles weighed by the pound, and they kept throwing their endless stash of bags on top of the roof.…

    The Poem Storm Warnings

In the poem, "Storm Warnings" the organization is very important to the fluency of the poem. In the very first line the reader starts to get a feeling of the literal meaning of the work. In saying, "The glass has been falling all the afternoon" one learns that a barometer is falling, hence bad weather is on its way. The allegory, symbolic representation, that "glass" is a barometer is because later in the poem, the words "instruments and weatherglasses" are used. The poets tone, the general atmosphere is dim and gloomy but one gets the feeling that the poem isn't about the storm but living through it. In the first stanza the reader understands that a storm is approaching, "gray unrest is moving across the land" and windows are boarded up to protect them from the forthcoming conditions. As the reader moves toward the second stanza, they understand that the storm is going to come as it has in the past, regardless of its prediction, but the metaphorical meaning starts to emerge. Time is cyclical as is the weather. In the third stanza the reader gets the impression that even if a storm or foul weather is predicted, one can only prepare for it, they can't change it. "The wind will rise, We can only close the shutters." Basically the storm will come and there is nothing anyone can do except plan for it. In the final stanza it appears that they have prepared for the storm; the windows have been shut, the curtains drawn, and the candles lit. "These are the things that we have learned to do Who live in troubled regions." In the last two lines of the poem, one understands that people have to adjust the way they live, especially in times of trouble.…

He states, “Meanwhile we did our nightly chores, --Brought in the wood from out of doors, Littered the stalls, and from the mows, Raked down the herd's-grass for the cows, Heard the horse whinnying for his corn; And, sharply clashing horn on horn, Impatient down the stanchion rows, The cattle shake their walnut bows; While, peering from his early perch, Upon the scaffold's pole of birch, The cock his crested helmet bent, And down his querulous challenge sent’’. The central metaphor in the story “The Storm” is the outside versus inside. The author is comparing their passion for each other to a storm. On the outside Calixta seemed very calm but on the inside, she wanted to be with Alcee sexually. This would be compared to a storm brewing. Once Calixta and Alcee met sexually, it was like an outpouring of emotions and passion. This to be compared to the thunder and lightning. Then as the storm passes, there is a sense of relief or renewal. The outside is clear and everyone is…
