The setting of a story is rarely ever just a place. The setting serves a purpose that helps add to the story being told. Truman Capote’s novel In Cold Blood is set in the small country town of Holcomb. He illustrates a tightly knit, religious, secluded town for his audience to identify with. Capote uses Holcomb to connect with his audience and as an ironic element, which in turn creates and adds to the emotional impact brought with the murders.…

    Gender Roles

Today’s television shows have made an effort to stray from the classic American family and the gender roles within it. While gender roles aren’t as evident as they use to be, that’s not to say they do not exist. The Brady Bunch is a perfect example of gender roles existing even in a non-traditional family in the 1970’s. In a more current show, Full House, we also see a non-traditional family without a mother, but after looking closer I found that gender roles are still there.…

As groups are forming it is easy to see that each group member has unique skills and strengths. As a group starts to develop, each group member starts to play a certain role within the group. Roles are very important within in a group because they are part of the basic structure. The roles of small groups are not usually assigned in advance, but overtime emerge within the group. Roles within a group can arise from individuals stepping up to fulfill a role or they already have the skills needed to fulfill a certain role. The group roles can be seen predominantly in the movie "Cool Runnings" where four Jamaican men join together with a coach to become Jamaica's first ever bobsled team. As the new bobsled team is starting their journey toward the Olympic Games, the five characters must learn how to work together as a group. The members of the bobsled team all have different skills and strengths that start to contribute to the overall success of the group. As the movie continues the team members begin to take on informal individual roles within the group. These informal roles can be explained in three main categories consisting of task roles, maintenance roles, and disruptive roles.…

Even today you can take a look around and see gender bias. In the music video called “Love Me” by Lil Wayne that features artists, Drake and Future, women are locked up in cages and the ones who aren’t, are posing in a very sexual manner, all being portrayed as obscene objects for men’s pleasure. Clearly the men have a dominating role and full power in the music video. The rappers hint that their happiness in life and in a relationship is based on their own pleasure where a woman should be treated in a less lady-like manner. All seems to add up to women striving for the attention from dominate males.…

Gender can de defined as a range of characteristics of feminity and masculinity, but is there really a manacle to what someone can or can’t do? The essays “About Men” by Gretel Ehrlich, “Uniforms” by Paul Fussell, and” Being a Man” by Paul Theroux amalgamate the pre- conceived idea that men and women are obligated to play this delusion of roles each sex should maintain. The media is a big influence in modern society; therefore being different would make the person incongruously alienated from the ones considered normal. Which with being pressured to fit it would cause insecurities among those not seen as perfect and making them go to extremities trying to fit in. It’s time to procrastinate against these rules because one can’t be genetically modified to have certain features, why should the individual live behind luxuries and necessities that the people are pressured in to.…
