The authors then compared the students’ scores with those of clinical teaching associates
(n = 34) and nursing program faculty (n = 18). Coudret et al. concluded that the practicum program was valuable in professionally socializing nursing students and should be continued to ease the transition from student to nurse.
The study of Dobbs (1988) supported the effectiveness of a senior preceptorship experience by demonstrating a statistically significant decrease in two areas upon completion of the course: role deprivation and professional role conception scores. In a study where baccalaureate students participated in either a preceptorship program or a traditional clinical training program, Itano, Warren, and Ishida (1987) found no statistically significant difference in professional role conception. Similarly, Lengacher (1994) found that professional development seminars had no effect on role conception for baccalaureate nursing students.

Lectures were delivered by program coordinators and a variety of members of the healthcare team including social workers, respiratory therapists, and physical therapists. The content was comprehensive and taught to the policies, procedures, and standards of the hospital.
Participants had at least 60 hours of classroom instruction and 100 hours of working shifts on their assigned unit with a preceptor by the completion of the 6-week program.
Measurement
The instrument used for this study consisted of two questionnaires: a demographic questionnaire developed by the researcher and the Nursing Role Conceptions Instrument developed by Pieta (1976) using
Corwin’s (1961) original definitions of the three role conceptions: professional, bureaucratic, and service.
Content validity of the instrument was determined by a panel of nurse experts with experience in teaching and nursing administration (Pieta, 1976). Seventy-five percent of the panel agreed that the final 34 items measured the role conceptions for which they were designed. The

    Over time in health care there have been times in which, the directors of the hospital have been trying to get rid of Licensed Practical Nurse or LPNs and want their nursing staff to only be Registered Nurses or RNs.
