In “Drummer,” Guy Vanderhaeghe shows us how important the need for one 's own principles really is. Setting place in the early 1950 's, Vanderhaeghe shares a story through Billy 's point of view, a small-town fifteen year old who starts to see the why principles are necessary throughout a series of events. These include: Billy standing up to his father after getting ridiculed for attending the “wrong” church; assessing his teacher, Ms. Clark 's view on why one needs principles; and when he starts to reflect on how Nancy 's principles dictate her decisions and how she reacts to the peer-pressure that Gene, his brother puts upon her. Vanderhaeghe shows us that the issues in such a small town are no different than the ones we face in society as a whole. He presents us with three characters that all show us the need for principles: Billy, Nancy, and Zipper. Principles are necessary because they give us something to believe in, and in turn, allow us to stand up for what we believe.…

The Hero’s Journey is described as the “challenges faced by women and men…[that] reveal[s] a process of personal transformation…when innocence was lost to a personal and often painful call to learning.” It is a time when one realizes that there is no turning back and that one must move forward in order to continue to develop or to do nothing and accept being a victim. A team like the Cincinnati Bengals, who have a fairly extensive history of struggling, would seem to bring out the worst in a writer like Reedy. As a person who gets frustrated easily by a lack of success and ineptitude in general, Reedy’s subjective tendencies in this regard are very likely to shine through when the team he covers not only struggles, but is embarrassed. Many sport writers would take a far less aggressive approach when the team they write about has issues, in an attempt not to upset the players and coaches on that team because that could potentially make doing their job more difficult down the road. With this excerpt, it is clear that Reedy feels very free to print his real, unedited opinions which bring out his subjective nature of harshness in the…
