Robin Williams Commemorative Speech
Robin Williams Commemorative Speech He was a husband, father, and great friend to many people. He was able to make people laugh no matter what the circumstance. He brought an energy to the stage that can’t be replaced. Robin Williams was born on July 21, 1951 in Chicago. He attended Claremont Men’s College before enrolling at the Juilliard School in New York City. After college Robin experimented with comedy in LA and San Francisco where he developed a successful stand-up act. Robin got his first real break on the TV show Happy Days as Mork, an alien from outer space. He was an instant hit after one appearance and even got his own spin off called Mork and Mindy. Robin went on to achieve many successful films winning him academy awards for his roles in Good Morning Vietnam in 1987 and his role in Dead Poets Society in 1989. Robin wasn’t perfect though, along with fame comes downfalls for many people and Robin was one of them. He developed a drug and alcohol addiction while working on the sitcom Mork and Mindy. He also had problems with his romantic relationships. After marrying and having a child with Valerie Velardi, they divorced and Robin married his son’s nanny, Marsha Garces the next year. But these discouraging times didn’t set Robin back a second, he had many roles including some of my favorites. He played grown-up peter pan in Hook (1991) and played the voice for the Genie in Aladdin. He also starred as the main character in the unforgettable, Mrs. Doubtfire in 1993, where he disguises himself as an old lady so he can be the nanny of his children after separating from their mother. Another great movie was Jumanji in 1995 where the game becomes real life. He also had roles in Flubber, Patch Adams, and Night at the Museum. There are many others, he wasn’t just known for his comedic talent but also for his ability to play serious roles. Robin suffered from Parkinson’s Disease and depression. He died in his home in California on August 11, 2014. He

It’s not that easy being green. It’s not that easy being a frog, either. Some would say that he is the most awesome amphibian of all time. Others would proclaim him a puppet above the rest. His name and footprints are on a star at Grauman’s Chinese Theater, a rare honor given only to the best in Hollywood. It’s an even greater leap for an amphibian. You guessed it. October 27, 2008 the day the city of Philadelphia finally could breathe a sigh of relief. On this date the Philadelphia Phillies won the 2008 World Series, breaking the city’s long 25 years of heart breaks since the city’s last major sport championship. They beat the Tampa Bay Rays in 5 Games in the best of 7 series. Four days later the city’s dreams of a parade down Broad Street finally became a reality. On October 31st, 2008 instead of costumes and Halloween candy the city was painted red. Everywhere you could see, everyone was celebrating the World Championship of our Philadelphia Phillies. The city took a day off. Whether it be from school, work, or even a day full of errands, the city shut down to be a part of this great memory. Hundreds of thousands poured into the heart of the Philadelphia. As the parade marched on down Broad Street, fans lined the street 40 to 50 rows of people deep. The sea of red shirts flooded Broad Street, but was then separated by the flatbed trucks that carried our beloved champions. The roar of the crowd chanting, “Let’s Go Phillies!” echoed throughout the entire city just like the Liberty Bell used too when it rang so many years ago. The parade ended in Citizens Bank Park with a sellout crowd. As they held up the trophy the place erupted in cheers.…

Over the years his real job has come with many different titles. For 50 years he has been a son and brother, for 31 he has been a loving father, for 26 he has been a dedicated husband, for 5 he has been a grandfather, and for 18 years and counting he has been and will always be my mentor. Today I would like to honor my father John Zachary Smith, and explain to you how and why he has become my mentor. Standing at exactly 6 feet tall, sporting dark black hair and tan skin, being loud, extremely talkative and radiating with energy, are just a few characteristics that can be attributed to his Italian heritage. When introducing himself to someone new, he reaches out his rough and calloused hand giving them a firm handshake and replies “My name’s John Smith, really honest”. My father has the ability to make friends with anyone because he is truly a real joy to be around. He sparks conversations with people and it would seem that were best friends.…

During his years at Juilliard, Robin became dear friends with Christopher Reeve, another young actor who would step into stardom and great success. Reeve immediately saw something in Williams that so many others overlooked; he saw an unusual and bizarre side to Williams’s personality and talent. Reeve compared Williams to an untied balloon that had been blown up to its capacity and then instantly released (qtd in Woodgate). However, he acknowledged that Williams was also very powerful and persuasive (qtd in Woodgate). At the young age of 42 in 1995, Reeve suffered from a horseback riding mishap causing him to become a quadriplegic. During Reeve’s long and arduous convalescence, Williams paid for many of Reeve’s medical expenses and provided financial aid to his family, which at the time, they were unable to afford. Williams was able to bring…

If I were to recreate the video for a 21st century audience, I would cast an older actor such as Robert De Niro to be the speaker, and I’d set the scene in a hospital. The reason for casting an older actor is because I’d want the beginning of the speech to be a reflection on his past and all that he’s gone through, and the ending of the speech to foreshadow what his future will look like. With the setting as a hospital, the opening scene could be Robert De Niro talking in a hospital room while a baby is held in a nurse's arms. In the same room could be a whining young boy in a school uniform as his mother walks with him through the door to go to school. Next, the scene would move from the hospital room into the corridor as 2 young people in…
